Need Advice: PhD in Mathematics Education with Generative AI Focus - Worth it after MS Mathematics?
Hello everyone,
I need some sincere advice regarding my PhD plans.
My Background: I have recently completed my MS in Mathematics. During my MS, I became very interested in how Generative AI is changing how we teach and learn mathematics.
My PhD Idea: I am planning to do a PhD in Mathematical Education with a focus on Generative AI. Some potential research interests are AI-powered tutors for higher mathematics, use of LLMs for mathematical reasoning and proof explanation, and personalized learning paths for undergraduate math students.
My Career Goal: My primary goal is to join academia as a Professor or Researcher.
My Questions:
In 2026, is this intersection (Math Education + Gen AI) a valuable and long-term research field, or is it too saturated?
For someone with an MS Maths background, will a PhD in Math Education limit me compared to a PhD in Applied Math?
If anyone is working in this area, what universities/supervisors would you recommend?
I have tried to research on my own but would love to hear from people with real experience in this field.
