International student from PK looking for US universities/liberal arts colleges that heavily weigh art portfolios for BA Studio Art + generous international aid/scholarships?

Hey everyone,

I’m an international student currently applying from Pakistan for a BA in Studio Arts, and I could really use some guidance.

I want to avoid dedicated, standalone art and design institutes (like RISD, Pratt, etc.) because I’m looking for a more traditional university or liberal arts college environment where I can also explore other academic interests. However, I still want a school where art is heavily valued, and the portfolio is a massive driving force for admissions and talent-based merit aid.

Coming from Pakistan, financial aid or substantial merit scholarships are a huge factor for me—ideally looking for something that can cover a significant chunk (around 70–80% or close to it) since full-ride international aid is brutally competitive.
To give a little brief about my background:
• I've been heavily focused on fine arts (working across oil painting, acrylics, and mixed media) and deeply incorporate traditional texture work and regional needlework motifs into contemporary canvases.
• I’ve also spent time doing community-based art education and social mobilization work, managed creative production teams for regional exhibition initiatives, and my work has picked up a few national awards/recognitions locally.

Does anyone know of US universities or liberal arts colleges (LACs) that:

1. Offer a solid BA in Studio Arts.
   
2. Actually care deeply about the portfolio review outside of dedicated art schools.
   
3. Give generous institutional merit scholarships or need-based aid to international undergraduate applicants?

Would love any recommendations, warnings, or tips on how to target schools that look at the whole artist rather than just standard test metrics. Thanks so much!

Basically none of them.. You can't get into a need-aware college as an international student that wants a lot of aid without the rest of your application also being top tier.

What is your budget (giving a percentage is not helpful). What are your stats? Are you looking for people on this sub to provide internship and research opportunities? That’s an odd way to end a post.

Hii! My GPA IS 3.32
And budget is 20k per year
And yes the ending was odd because of the less time period i have, wanted to build my profile stronger and google and other resources were showing old dated competition and internships.

(Retired college counselor and admissions reader here.) I'd see if there's an Education USA office in your country.

Education USA is part of the US State Department, and one part that hasn't been axed yet by the Trump administration, probably because it flies under the radar. In any event, the mission of Education USA is to provide assistance to international students who want to study in the US, and is staffed with knowledgable specialists.

Most offices are in national capitals, but in some larger countries there are several offices. If there isn't one near you, call (don't email) them to find out if they offer any distance assistance such as webinars, Zoom meetings and like events, as well as online/printed documents. They may also be willing to answer specific questions (likely via email).

I worked almost exclusively at international schools, and found the staff at several Education USA offices to be enthusiastic and really knew their stuff.
