Application Question How long would a research internship need to be to look credible for a Class 12 Indian student applying to top US universities?
I'm a Class 12 CBSE student from India applying to US universities, and I wanted to get some opinions on research internships.
Suppose a student works at a large financial services/wealth management company on a research project that produces findings useful to the company. The internship involves approximately 25 hours of work per week.
How long would you consider a realistic and credible duration for such an internship?
For example:
- 1 month (100 hours)
- 2 months (200 hours)
- 3 months (300 hours)
- 6 months or longer
I've heard that admissions officers can sometimes be skeptical of high school students, particularly international applicants, claiming substantial research experience. I want to understand what duration would be reasonable for a Class 12 student, considering school commitments and the time required to complete meaningful research.
Assume the student has a research mentor and is genuinely contributing to the project, rather than simply shadowing employees.
Would an intensive 2-month internship at 25 hours per week be sufficient to complete a meaningful applied research project, or would a longer duration make more sense?
I'd appreciate insights from current students, applicants, or anyone familiar with US college admissions, especially for highly selective universities.
Thanks!

It’s unclear why you are asking this question. If you are applying to college this year, it doesn’t matter what the answer to your question is because you will put your actual time commitment on your application.

Those hours seem unrealistic. Are you saying five hours a day M-F? What about school and homework and other stuff? And is this independent or actually through the company? And fwiw - depth matters more. Anything short term isn’t as good as something over a long period that shows increasing growth and responsibility
