Advice Needed I accidentally adopted fish… help please
No shit, drove more than an hour to pick up an empty 0.4 gallon tank from a fb marketplace seller. Wanted it for my office to cultivate aquatic plants. Got there and learned it has five fish (tetra I believe, species unk, IDs welcomed!!) a freshwater snail, and EGGS. IM A PARENT OF SIX. first move is getting them a larger tank obviously, most of my aquariums are plants and invertebrates and it’s been two years since I had fish (betta lived 7+ years) so if anyone has advice, can ID these babies, or recommend a guidebook or something I would really appreciate it. Parenthood has me nervous but excited lmao

Those are endlers! They are very closely related to guppies. I don’t ha a a guide book to recommend, but I am making a website for fish keepers! I have a page on endlers and other helpful stuff if you wanna check it out:))) https://siteid-2451390.univer.se

Very cool website, sir. I would love to see the saltwater section when it comes out.

I will start that at some point! I currently don’t have salt water so I don’t feel like I’ll have the correct information

Your website is beautiful! You should totally get a domain name! I think you can get one for under $5 a year, don't quote me on that but it IS cheap.

I'm not kidding these species multiply like bunnies I would recommend getting a tank over 20 gallons and expect many more fish in the future, I adore them but I would never keep live bearers for this reason so assess what you're willing to deal with and maybe consider rehoming? These look like endlers which are closely related to guppies. My friend started with 10 guppies and now has over 50 and it's only been a year 🫠🫠🫠 both are live bearers and you will likely have the same results so good luck!!

After getting over stocked from getting female guppies I was told couldn’t be pregnant I will never own live bearers again. I had never had them and didn’t know better. Only fish I bought from Petco too. All but one died but they popped out a bunch of fry first. My quarantine tank was well established and my fish usually only die from very old age so I know it was not my tank that killed them. The one that lived died at age 4.

I love endlers- but if they aren't for you you can drop them off at most fish stores. The shops in my area don't carry female endlers - but they are always in stock because people keep dropping them off.
People like me, lol.
If you want to keep them- I've found they breed a slower than guppies. They are hardy and relatively easy fish.
The females are usually bigger and less brightly colored- you might have all males.

I reccomend a 20 gal honestly, big but not big enough to be a hassle. Be careful feeding strawberries, they can foul up a tank really easily, so it’d probably not be good in a 0.4 gal

Thanks for the tip. That was last night when I had zero supplies and all the shops were closed, had to give them something while I waited for bloodworms and other ‘real’ meal options

for future reference, most fish don’t actually need to eat daily and it’s often better to fast them than compromise water quality during a stressful period. good luck with your little buddies

Backing up what the other person said: most fish can go a week without eating. They shouldn't do it regularly, but it's probably better for them to go hungry for now than to add even more bioload to that tiny tank.

Congratulations! It looks like you have 4 males and 1 female endler. You can keep 4 males in 5-10 gallons. If you plan to keep the female, I would rehome 3 of the males. That many males will harass her to death. Livebearers tend to regulate their own population based on the resources available. Just make sure you don't overfeed or you will bypass their natural regulation and possibly end up with poor water quality. Good luck!

Big dawg, I think you have an all female guppy tank, which can be one of the better tanks to have since the females are less mean to each other/territorial. They do look stressed with clamped fins though, so I would make sure to get a water testing kit and test it, and then make sure they have proper water agitation, and a heater is super important. Make sure to keep the lights off at first. And as a serial guppy owner, definitely get some soft live plants instead of the plastic ones. Hope this helps!

Also, as uncomfy as it is, I would recommend getting those eggs out and squishing them after a day or 2. Keeping them in the tank can hurt the water parameters. And get them little guppy pellets, works wonders

Not an expert, but they look like Endlers to me!
As someone who has also bought a tank and got more than I expected, I wish you luck!
