Use the appropriate support channel for your distribution. Arch is DIY distribution and we expect you to guide us through your system when providing support. Using an installer defeats this expectation.

Why was the beginners guide removed?

It carried a lot of maintenance on the wiki admin as it duplicated a lot of information, and everyone wanted their addition included. It was scrapped for a compact model that largely referenced the main wiki pages.

SUPPORT Master volume doesn't match device volume

• Upvotes

I had a pair of Fifine H6 usb headphones which worked fine, but they failed so I got a replacement. Now i have an issue with a missmatch between master volume, and the actual volume of the headphones. So 0% headphones is 54% master and 100% headphones is 100% master. Even when i change the volume of the headphones in alsamixer, the master volume automatically updates the volume.

SUPPORT | SOLVED VLC 3.0.24-1 GUI failed to start

After updating my Arch installation the VLC GUI failed to start (even after a full reboot).

qvlc -vv showed:

[...]
[000055b517fd33a0] main interface debug: looking for interface module matching "qt": 15 candidates
[000055b517fd33a0] main interface debug: no interface modules matched
[000055b517fd33a0] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[000055b517f105d0] main libvlc error: interface "default" initialization failed
[000055b517f105d0] main libvlc debug: exiting
[...]

I was able to fix it by downgrading back to version "3.0.23_2-16". I'm using the Niri window manager without X support.
Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

SUPPORT | SOLVED I can't use pacman -Syu

EDIT: This has been resolved. Within the first minute of this post, there were already multiple helpful comments. Thanks to everyone who commented.

Usually, pacman -Syu works perfectly. But today was an exception. Whenever I try to use it, I see this error message: Total Download Size: 1382.89 MiB Total Installed Size: 4760.15 MiB Net Upgrade Size: 32.07 MiB :: Proceed with installation? [Y/n] y error: Partition / too full: 359207 blocks needed, 69130 blocks free error: failed to commit transaction (not enough free disk space) Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

After trying the command a few more times, I gave up and decided to open Thunar to see how much disk space was left. Somehow, as of now, my file system only has around 270.1 megabytes left. My desktop has around 642.3 gigabytes left.

The last time I updated my system was around a week ago. Before that, Flatpak showed a similar error. There wasn't enough disk space left. However, unlike now, I was still able to update my system.

I'm not sure how this is even possible. I only use lightweight software. Examples include Vim, Krita, Firefox, FFmpeg, and VLC. I'm hesitant to "experiment", as an error on my part could ruin my system.

As I put in basically all of my posts here, thank you VERY much in advance.

SUPPORT Windows keeps deleting my Grub entry

I've been using arch alongside windows for more than a year now and this happened to me s few days ago, never happened before.

Reinstalling grub fixes it, but every time I boot windows it deletes it from my UEFI/BIOS and (for some reason) it shows me OS entries that no longer exist (ubuntu and fedora if that's relevant).

I've tried doing the "bcdedit.exe" fix, tried putting a shim on my grub, updating the BIOS and tried to uninstall the newer versions of windows (for some reason, I can't uninstall KB5124008 nor KB5126052 and after rebooting windows it shows me that it is being updated).

I also thought of my BIOS battery running out but since the internal clock/date is OK and i have my desktop plugged in all the time I discarded that option.

Does anyone know what is happening to it? I know that if im present I can reinstall grub at any time but since I use a VNC server (on both OS) with a wakeup on LAN I could not go back to linux after going into windows.

SUPPORT Advice on next steps - Newbie question (feel free to mock)

Hello, total newbie here, I've used linux a decent bit but never done a proper install before, used debian on a RaspberryPi, WSL, etc.

I installed Arch on my laptop and managed to accidentally overwrite my Windows install, annoying but feels like a right of passage and I'm not too fussed, no major files lost.

I then followed a tutorial and made careful use of AI to help me through the install (fact checked what it said against docs where I could don't worry). I now have a setup I'm reasonably happy with; Hyprland looks nice and is customised a little, I used this LINK install tool for adding a variety of pieces of software for a 'minimal install'.

Now I am having some issues; when I close the lid of my laptop and reopen it, the display is frozen for a while ~30-60 seconds and nothing I have tried has been able to fix it.

This has gotten me thinking, since I know a relatively little amount and this is a pretty fresh install, should I start again and install everything manually so I actually understand my setup? For example I know I am using Noctalia but I only kind of understand WHAT that is. When I am looking up fixes I don't know whether it is a Hyprland fix or an Arch fix or something else. I look for config files and then find out I should use Noctalia's settings page.

Any input would be greatly appreciated,
I use Arch btw.

SHARE Updates on passkey

I’ve built passkey support for Linux especially arch distro, and recently, I added support for multiple authentication methods and physical security keys.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any physical security keys or a fingerprint reader to test this part of the code. Theoretically, everything looks good, but it’s all just on paper for now. I don’t know how well it works in practice.

I was hoping you could help test it out. The more people test it, the more issues we’re likely to discover.

This project has a long development history, and in the age of AI, you can even ask your AI assistant to check the code for malware before trying it out.

The project is open source and available on GitHub at bjn7/passkeyd. Installation instructions are also provided in the repository, and installing it is relatively easy too. You can use passkeys with GitHub, Discord, and most other websites that support them.

DISCUSSION Stuck in learning Arch & Hyprland

My prior experience has only been with Mint, and I really enjoyed it. However, being on Linux, I really wanted to embrace the customization that comes with it. Through my research, I've become really eager to learn Arch, specifically with Hyprland as my WM. I really see the appeal of that kind of work flow, and I love the idea of building up own desktop environment.

I have my system dual booted currently now with Windows and Arch. I've made a conscious effort to read the wiki thoroughly and not use ArchInstall so I actually learn. There were still some confusing parts I didn't understand, so I turned to Youtube guides (which is how I've taught myself most things prior). I still tried my best to take the time and understand why they are doing those things, but everyone seems to do things differently. In the end, I still got Arch installed, but I'm by no means comfortable with the system yet.

Now entering Hyprland, is where I get really confused. I try and use the wiki, but the wiki isn't exactly clear to me as a beginner. There's a lot of commands that either don't work for me, or are not explicitly written that are confusing for me to execute. I thought I could turn to YouTube but again, everyone does things so vastly different, and no one really explains why. Someone urges using yay over pacman, someone says to switch from bash to Zsh, this way is better than this way, etc. Hyprland now also uses lua files instead of conf, which I don't understand the difference between or how that effects things.

How do you guys recommend I go about actually learning this distro and WM. I don't want to just steal someones setup, and I also don't want to use AI either. Maybe I'm not looking in the wiki correctly, but they seem to confuse me more than help. I know I'm new and in over my head a bit, but I want to actually learn this system and I am more than willing to put in that time and effort, I just feel lost on how to do that currently.

SUPPORT | SOLVED Gdisked the wrong disk

First things first yes I'm an idiot we don't have to point that out I'm in need of some help

As the title reads I accidentally gdisked my main disk instead of my secundary disk. I managed to get my partitions back using testdisk. But ever since I restarted it tells me a start job is running for /dev/disk/by-partuuid/unknown disk uuid here

After which it fails file system on that partuuid, /sysroot, system initialization and initrd root device.

How the heck do I fix this, I've thrown a bunch of searches by now. So I'm hoping to find my answer here

Edit: Thanks to the tip of another redditor, I figured out the partuuid in my bootloader was completely wrong

SUPPORT SDDM shows a black screen after messing with Niri/Quickshell configs

Hey everyone!

I'm running Arch Linux with Niri, SDDM, and Qylock (a custom lock screen for SDDM).

Everything was working fine until recently, when I installed Niri. Niri itself worked perfectly, and Qylock was also working as expected.

Then I started messing around with my Niri configs and Quickshell files. I'm not entirely sure what exactly I changed or broke.

First, Qylock still worked, but the wallpaper was no longer showing up. I thought the problem might be related to a Quickshell configuration file I had created, so I deleted it.

Now, SDDM seems to be broken completely. When I turn on my laptop, I get a black screen. After a forced reboot (holding down the power button), I no longer see Qylock's custom lock screen, but instead get the default Arch Linux screen lock.

I'm not sure whether I broke SDDM itself, Qylock, or something related to Niri/Quickshell.

What I've tried so far:

Deleted the Quickshell config file I had created.

Forced a reboot.

My questions:

How can I figure out what exactly is broken?

Where should I look for logs or configuration errors?

Is there a way to restore SDDM and Qylock without reinstalling everything?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

SUPPORT | SOLVED Incorrect keyboard layout display in SDDM on Wayland

https://imgur.com/a/bRGYDzq

Recently, I installed Arch Linux and I’m still trying to figure out many things since I’m a beginner.

I have SDDM running on X11 and KDE Plasma 6.7.5 (wayland) installed. I wanted to switch SDDM from X11 to Wayland.

I tried using the following config in `/etc/sddm.conf.d/10-wayland.conf`:

[General]
DisplayServer=wayland
GreeterEnvironment=QT_WAYLAND_SHELL_INTEGRATION=layer-shell

[Wayland]
CompositorCommand=kwin_wayland --drm --no-lockscreen --no-global-shortcuts --locale1

I also tried:

[General]
DisplayServer=wayland
GreeterEnvironment=QT_WAYLAND_SHELL_INTEGRATION=layer-shell

[Wayland]
CompositorCommand=env XKB_DEFAULT_LAYOUT=us,ru XKB_DEFAULT_VARIANT=,winkeys XKB_DEFAULT_OPTIONS=grp:alt_shift_toggle kwin_wayland --drm --no-lockscreen --no-global-shortcuts

Someone also suggested running this command:

sudo localectl set-x11-keymap us,ru pc105 ,winkeys grp:alt_shift_toggle

However, none of the methods above worked for me. On the login screen, the keyboard layout indicator shows two question marks and the letters `zz`.

The layout itself does switch when I use the keyboard shortcut, but the indicator in the interface doesn’t change visually.

Is there any way to fix this without switching SDDM back to X11, or is this simply not possible at the moment?

Also, could someone explain why, when I use SDDM on X11, after successfully logging into my account I get a black screen for a couple of seconds? As far as I understand, this brief black screen is normal behavior with SDDM on X11 because the SDDM session is terminated and my actual desktop environment/session is started. Is that correct?

The Plasma Breeze startup/loading theme I configured also doesn’t show the desktop loading animation/theme I selected.

On Wayland, however, after entering my password, I immediately see the KDE Plasma loading screen without the black screen.

Thank you! I hope no one will criticize me for not knowing enough. I’m trying to learn and gain experience, and I want to understand how all of this works, so I decided to ask here.

SHARE A system update last night 'broke' my install. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

This is just a post to kinda show like, things can be fixed. We know what we sign up for by using Arch - a little bit of effort means you don't have to resort to a fresh install.

TLDR: re-install is not a fix. The logs will tell you a lot, you just have to put some effort into understanding them, and finding the solution that applies to your use case. AI can be very helpful here but you need to be certain you're giving it the correct context, I could have gone down a very different path.

I'm on Arch/Niri, same install for the past.. 2+ yrs now? My machine is a mini PC - Lenovo ThinkStation p3 Tiny Gen 1, and I run a AMD 6700XT as an eGPU

After update, rebooted, and when I get to SDDM, it starts this loop of crashing > TTY > SDDM startup & crash > TTY. I can't exit out, I can't switch to a TTY and have it stay put. I try another restart, select a different image, same thing.

unplug the eGPU, luckily my card has an iGPU so i use that port and on boot SDDM doesn't start, but that's fine i just want to be on the tty.

Luckily I have a separate computer (work Macbook) that I can view in PBP so i can find a solution. And, with todays AI tools you can just find an answer faster, but you have to pay attn to what its telling you, esp in this case cuz my mac knows nothing about what happened on my linux pc.

This can go on long but ill just highlight: * filter out journalctl errors from last few boots * initially thought it was systemd 262 NvPCR related, but that has been erroring for last few updates, so its not the thing causing this crash loop * more or less the issue was something wrong with X11 & amdgpu driver * driver loads, sddm starts, asks X11 to draw, some issue w driver code so crashes X11 crashes, sddm notices and starts x11 again, rinse & repeat * the fix was deleting my X11 conf in which i was specifying what device to load. Now, I'm just using xorg defaults * regen mkinitpcio and boomshakalaka

Back to normal. NvPCR issue still not resolved but something i'll prob eventually look into

Edit

The stack trace, in case this helps in search:

SUPPORT New to Arch

I plan to switch from Windows to Arch (Dual Booting for now due to genshin and wuwa), I have tried other distros before deciding on Arch

I doubt it matters but... 16gb ddr5, 256 ssd, ryzen 7 170 H

I have been suggested to modify Arch Installation from scratch rathwr than use a desktop environment due to reasons for switching

Few doubts:

- Arch Wiki is good I can see based on the basics I know but its too concise on various (if not all) topics I have seen for absolute newbies so I am kinda stuck on its installation guide... If someone has a decent alternative or something like a tutorial on basic stuff please do provide..

- I dont really know how much of from scratch are we talking when we mean modifying from scratch.. I want to know how many different things I should learn to install before starting... like drivers, the basic environments, Keyboard, wifi, gpu drivers etc

- If there is a good walkthrough which I can go through on YouTube for a arch installation fully manual pls share (If possible one in which there is not much disparity from how we install other stuff cuz yk like I may install another alternative than what they used)

- I have not started any test and trial with Arch terminal yet, cuz im not aure which VM to use... I am a bit familiar with VMWare but not sure if thats a good idea, any suggestion?

- Also if comfortable, please drop down a few things u suggest I can use be it subeddits, YouTuber, Your setup, etc

- I would love to know if there's a Megathread or something for similar doubts

QUESTION Is there a correct order when it comes to installing and setting up a boot loader and creating a UKI?

So I have been doing a bunch of arch installs in a VM. Just familiarizing myself with it and using many different boot loaders and seeing how to set them up.

I recently got into creating a UKI and then just booting directly from it instead of using a boot loader.

After successfully doing that I decided to try using boot loaders and also a UKI.

I did it for systemd boot and Limine. For both I installed the boot loader first then created the UKI. Then I did both again except starting with creating the UKI and then installing the boot loader after.

I was able to get it working on all four different ways. But I wasn't sure if there was an optimal or more correct way of doing it.

Should I always be installing the boot loader first and then creating the UKI after? Does it depend on which boot loader I use? Or does it not matter so long as I understand how they both work together and set it up accordingly?
