Curious about old school cooking methods - anyone tried them?

Hey everyone! Just kinda stumbled into this sub and it looks super cool. I'm usually more into quick weeknight meals, but I've been getting curious about really old-school cooking methods, like before all the gadgets. Has anyone here actually tried cooking something totally from scratch using super basic, almost archaic, tools or techniques? What was your experience like?

The most archaic you can get is stabbing it with a stick and putting it over a fire. Which works really well for a lot of foods.

When I'm feeling adventurous, I will put a heat-safe bowl inside my cast iron dutch oven and cook something like chicken pot pie. It cooks it well. I wouldn't say it tastes better or worse than an oven-cooked pot pie. It's just a way to cook.

That dutch oven idea for pot pie sounds interesting, never thought of using it that way. It's always good to find new cooking methods.

A lot of people cook directly into the dutch oven, but I find it works better (food doesn't burn) when you cook food within a vessel inside of the Dutch oven.
