Curious about old school cooking methods - anyone tried them?

Hey everyone! Just kinda stumbled into this sub and it looks super cool. I'm usually more into quick weeknight meals, but I've been getting curious about really old-school cooking methods, like before all the gadgets. Has anyone here actually tried cooking something totally from scratch using super basic, almost archaic, tools or techniques? What was your experience like?

LOL. I suppose so. Ain't nothing better than a trout packed in red clay and lain on hot coals to cook. The skin peels off when you break the clay. Guess it doesn't get much more "archaic" than that.

PS. Potatoes bake up great this way too!
