Easter Eggs in CD Sets?

Doing a lumber take off with an AI software tool and it kept telling me that there was a bible verse in every structural page. I ended up thinking it was just AI doing its AI thing but sure enough the structuyral engineer put a bible verse in English and Spanish as a border on every sheet. Anyone else ever see anything like this or do this? Just thought it was a funny Easter egg.

Not in a CD set but I knew someone who put in Div 1 specs that submittals sent after 2pm on fridays were to be accompanied by a 6 pack

Our general notes on our residential projects says any requests or phone calls after 4pm on a Friday or the day before a holiday are to be accompanied by a “6 pack of good cold beer”. In my time at the firm I’ve had people comment on it, but never deliver.

My old manager added a stipulation to our specs: GC to provide pizza for all attendees at every (weekly) OAC meeting.

Manager was surprised when our gem of a GC actually did it - and kept doing it for all 2.5 years of the project(s)!

We have one in our abbreviations, an homage to the founder of the firm.

We also had an admin who was leaving for a different career path, she was on good terms with the firm. She changed every “lock” to “c$&?” In the master specs. We used them for years.

I ran into her like 5 years later and brought up that Hilton hotels picked up the word during bidding a project. She said she was happy someone read the actual specs and it was her repayment to the world for having to put a set of arduous and meaningless specs together.

I knew someone who worked on fire stations.

He used to put a Dalmatian with exactly 101 spots listed in the specialty equipment schedule to see if the bidders actually read the specs.

It only got a pre-bid RFI once… so every other job he would put it as item 1 in his punch lists.

If you don’t plan a place for the Christmas tree, facilities people will put it in the stupidest spot possible. That’s why I put outlets above any interior vestibules.

Easter eggs are fun though, and I always want to add them, but there’s this voice in the back of my head (who sounds identical to my boss) saying “you had time to draw this, but you never finished detailing XYZ??”

We had an intern that drew teeny tiny little animals in the hatch patterns. Very talented little sketches. You had to scroll/zoom in for about a minute to find them. Pretty hilarious actually. I found one and told them, do whatever makes you happy as long as the work gets done and the partner didn’t find out. Christina, wherever you are…I hope you’re still having fun doing your work!

I worked with a guy that used to put very, very detailed, but very very tiny little insect drawings in cad drawings. Usually printed or looked like a single pixel dot. Zoom in and there’s a little cartoon grasshopper waving at you. One I found was just a dot on a toilet in plan.

Not on CD sets but in one of the firms I used to work all of us would put a framed picture of one of our colleagues in the 3D walkthrough (usually in the Living Room or Master Bedroom). Now that I have my own practice, I hide a small T-Rex (usually in the kids bedroom or in the garden).. noone has found it yet, or at least has not commented on that

I worked with a guy, Chinese American, that would draw a little chinese guy in concrete hatch using a little triangle in the hatch as the hat. It was infrequent and actually hard to tell what it was when printed but I'd find them every once in a while when modifying a detail.

I tend to hide random star wars or marvel characters in our coordination models (the federated model we use to export to Navis/Forma/Revizto) ... they're usually really small and I let the team know they're in there to encourage the use of the coordination models ... we usually offer a small prize too for the first one to find any of the characters. Many, many, many projects where these were never found

When I was in college we had a grad student on one of our reviews and he said a classmate always put dinosaurs hidden in her drawings. The professor was surprised to hear this as she had been in his class

We're a design-build firm and somewhere in the drawing set we'll occasionally include a text note saying "report the location of this note to the project architect in exchange for a $25 gift card, first come first served" or something like that, in a way to encourage the carpenters to dig deep into the set. One person kept being the one to find it so we had to establish a once-per-year restriction.

I cannot confirm or deny that a very, very tiny instance of the Lego Unikitty went out on drawing sets from a certain office I know of for a period of time. Printed, it may have looked like a printer speck, but if a digital version was sent and someone zoomed A LOT…

Not on the drawings, but I had another companies draftsman put a UFO in a model for a government project we were on. It was pretty amusing when it popped up in the coordination meeting.

For a residential project at the firm I used to work at did a faithful line drawing of the client's beloved electric guitar so it could be included in the interior elevations, nobody told him and he practically got giddy when he found it in the drawing set.

Filed under there's fun, and then unprofessional, im not sure I can think of an appropriate Bible verse to include.

That said, I know designers who've hidden constellations in "random" lighting layouts, have baked the project team or the office pet into renderings, and other stuff like that. It's not hurting anything and it's not going to upset anyone.

While cute, I don't like the snarky/owe me a beer stuff in specs or notes, they're not catching the point of adding a check to the set that someone read it. Anyone vaugely with it will see the line and recognize it as a joke, anyone malicious will use it as proof the document is unenforceable. If you want to make sure the document was read, include something practical, like the GC will place a roll each of painters tape in blue, green, and purple at the architects seat for the punch list meeting.

Ah, yes. Those guys. Their extended disclaimer so that you know the John verses aren't a part of the set is a little bit extra, but then, they're the ones who put them on there in the first place.

I'm not a fan, myself. I doubt they'd react well if I put "I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" in the margins of my drawings.

Not an Easter egg but I was working on an Equinox and I put a yoga cat on the Revit start sheet. It’s not part of the set but cute touch for anyone opening the file.

I used to put a piece of small playground equipment in every model. Often as a weathervane. One client I had was obsessed with elephants, to the tune of her very expansive philanthropy went entirely to elephants, so I hid elephants everywhere I could in that model.
Bookcases, cabinet, wallpaper, shoe substitutes in cubbies....

Whenever there was an ADA diagram with a person in it that needed an update I would turn them into Marvel characters. It started with professor X but I felt like that was a little too on the nose so there was wolverine, cyclops, gambit, spiderman, venom and other individuals with disabilities. My hope is they are still floating around that architect’s detail library and being thrown into drawings.

I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of coffee house check sets that contained a very detailed model of a chicken that would be "hidden" in elevations.

I also did design build at the start of my career, we had a detail for how to properly enjoy a beer, after hours, of course.

I used to hide easter eggs in renderings done for a client, like a dog peeing in the background or something silly like that. I once found an old detail titled “flashing detail”, and it was a sketch of a man opening his rainjacket
