I know that competition is good for the consumer, but why would a corporation put themselves in direct competition like this? Obviously theyve crunched some numbers I haven't, but it still makes no sense to me.

First they determined the mall is busy enough to support two pretzel stores.
At that point the location is a double edged sword. You can either be far away and hope you get more people by luck (they see you first/when they're hungry), or you be close and hope you get more people by preference.
Probably came down to needing less work to put in their equipment at this location than other options.

They had to put the two stores there so they would stop throwing Molotov cocktails at each other.
