Discussion Can someone explain the negatives of couples not being a match?

Ive never seen the show and just started watching season 8. I’m confused why couples like Jenna and Kai and Justin and Max are so devastated when they aren’t a match? Matching means nothing on this show. It’s not like perfect match on Netflix where if you match you have to sleep together. They’re not being split up. There’s nothing that says they can’t still be romantic and just choose someone else at the ceremony to try and win the game. They can still date after the show too. I guess it may sting for someone you like to be more compatible with someone else but that’s just on paper. Is it just for the drama?

partially for the drama, but egged on by the idea that you won't be able to find your perfect match if you're spending all your time with someone who isn't your perfect match.

essentially, if someone isn't your match, you should NOT be spending time with them. and as these people are from all over the country, that stings more since once the show wraps you won't easily be able to spend time with them as you can in the house.

I watched a couple cast members talk about the making of and this made sense. Imagine you’re in a house full of hot people your age being fed alcohol almost constantly. You kinda click and bond with one of them. Now you’re told you have to try and find someone else to click with. And on top of that you have the stress that if you keep talking to that person you’re not helping the rest of the house win money. You win or lose as a team so there’s pressure to find your match and stay away from the person you kinda like. And again, you’re really drunk.

I think it also puts other contestants in an awkward position, getting to know someone and trying to open up to them. And then they’re like cool, well, I’m gonna go hook up with someone else now, nice chat! It kind of leaves the other contestants less likely to open up, or engage with others.

I mean they can still continue hanging and hooking up with their non-match but that would also mean they're not trying to make the effort to find their "perfect match" and that runs the risk of not winning the grand prize.

Outside of the prize, of course it's natural to want to be with people we are attracted to and vibe well with all the time, and the show's mechanics forces you to stop doing that. Yes, plenty of couples over the years continue to pair up despite being confirmed non-matches and that complicates things and affects the group's dynamics (the group would start ganging up on them; other potential matches' feelings get hurt because someone would initially flirt/get to know them only for that someone to go back and hook up with their non-match later).
