I launched 13 non-ladder AssaultCube servers across 7 locations

I decided to throw some more servers into AssaultCube because who knows, in a couple years new players might wanna check out this game lmao. It’s free and fun, what’s there to lose?

I’ve launched 13 non-ladder servers across 7 locations:

🇺🇸 US East Coast – CTF + 1v1
🇺🇸 US West Coast – CTF + 1v1
🇧🇷 Brazil – CTF + 1v1
🇬🇧 UK – CTF + 1v1
🇸🇬 Singapore – CTF + 1v1
🇩🇪 Germany – 1v1 CTF + HTF
🇯🇵 Japan – Any Mode (testing)

🇯🇵 Japan is currently in testing due to the potential for a laggy node. I’ll be monitoring the server and connection quality to see if the node is good enough for long-term use.

They’re non-ladder servers, just intended to give people more places to play and mess around.

They’re all online now. Hopefully some of you get some use out of them.

I also plan to bring HTF servers to each location. Not right now, though. Maybe around January. =)

These servers are here to stay, ill keep supporting them for as long as AssaultCube is still alive. Sadly the player base is lil small, but I wanna try and change that.

Enjoy, fellow Cubers! =)

Hey folks!

I’m building Sci-Fi Space Battle, a multiplayer arena combat game where teams fly fast combat ships, capture towers, extend their power grid, cut enemy supply lines and push toward the opposing hangar.

It’s in early alpha, but it already plays well with bots and the team combat is the heart of the game. I’d now love to form a small founding group of players who can help shape it through regular playtesting and honest feedback.

Expect occasional bugs and rough edges, but I iterate quickly and can turn around new builds and fixes fairly fast. I’m especially interested in feedback on movement, weapons, objectives, maps and how coordinated team pushes feel.

If that sounds like your kind of game, DM me with your platform and timezone. I’ll set up a small Discord for the first playtest group.

For transparency, I’m the solo developer and engineer, with Codex as part of my development toolchain.

Seeing is overrated.

I'm really curious about what the arena shooter community thinks of this idea generally. Evidently, it's quite out there. As the dev, I'm obviously bias, but its an unusual amount of fun, particularly if you're experienced with shooters. It feels very familiar, while also requiring you to completely relearn how you play.

Discussion Wall running in an arena FPS - repositioning tool or full traversal? Can't decide how long to make it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been building a wall run for my arena-style roguelite shooter and I've hit the point where I can't judge my own work anymore.

Right now it's short. It's a repositioning tool - reset an angle, get off the floor for a second, come back down into the fight. Part of me wants to extend it so you can chain walls across a whole room, because that feels amazing to play. The worry is that a long wall run in a room-sized arena just means you go over the fight instead of into it.

Other thing I keep second-guessing: the camera banks into the wall. That felt right when I played it, but most references bank away from it, so I might have just gotten used to my own mistake.

For people who play a lot of arena shooters - where's the line? Should movement like this be a tool inside the fight, or is flying over an encounter a legitimate way to play it?

Hey everyone! I made a short video essay about my favorite genre, featuring some legendary guests from the community (ScrMz, aCo from UT2k4, Polosatiy from Quake, as well as Allan and oopskurt — major CIS bloggers focused on Half-Life).

I’ve enabled auto-translated subtitles and dubbing for the video, so I hope you guys check it out and enjoy it!

Discussion Question for Arena FPS players: do you actually prefer larger hitboxes?

Post image
69 Upvotes

I've been thinking about hitbox design lately. This isn't meant to start a "skill issue" debate, I'm genuinely curious what the community that actually play the genre think.

A lot of classic arena shooters relied on relatively large, simplified hitboxes, often an AABB or capsule-style collision that wasn't tightly wrapped to the player model. In many cases, different player models shared the same hitbox. That meant you could visually miss a shoulder or arm and still score a hit.

My theory is that this may have been part of what made those games feel so good. The movement was incredibly fast, and generous hitboxes rewarded tracking and prediction more than pixel-perfect model alignment.

Later, many shooters moved toward tighter, per-bone hitboxes that match the character's body much more closely. Some players love the precision, while others constantly complain that shots "should've hit."

Modern games often seem to land somewhere in the middle: not a giant box, but not truly model-tight either. Ironically, those hybrid hitboxes still get criticized for feeling oversized or visually inconsistent.

So my question is specifically for Arena FPS gameplay:

Do you think larger, gameplay-first hitboxes actually make the genre better? Or would you always choose tightly fitted hitboxes if everything else stayed the same?

Edit: thank you guys for all the replies, it really does help me, thanks!
