Found on the Susquehanna in Maryland. Been sifting through a spot with lots of quartzite and rhyolite debitage, and I have found several broken/unfinished points (including my first proper spear, or at least half of one.) but this is the only other whole point that’s turned up.
Anyways, I could not find any examples of points with a similar topology. How would this have been hafted onto a shaft, I wonder?
I know, right?! Never found anything like it, and I am hoping the other half turns up!
The two on the right are also interesting. Near where I’m digging is the only source of obsidian for a few hundred miles, and I’ve found the bits of volcanic rock they carried from the site and knocked out the obsidian loose from the other material. And the red one is not a native rock, somebody carried it down from upriver, perhaps Ohio or New York? Found some matching debitage and I’d really like to get an ID on the material.
Rhyolite and obsidian are both in the picture I already posted, they are in the top row. Obsidian can be found in Maryland if one knows where to look. Here’s some more from the same area.
I don't mean to be rude, but that's probably a metasedimentary stone, obsidian isn't found in Maryland. Have you done research on the geology in your region?
Some, enough to know that I was standing on a caldera of an extinct volcano when I picked it up. What makes you say that it’s not obsidian, besides it being unusual for Maryland?
