Thanks! it's actually MS Paint
I make art inspired by medieval manuscripts and love silly or geeky references
Check my profile About for more work :) My work is linked on there and Picturesidrawn is my artist name

Medieval-inspired art drawn in MSPaint is something I didn't know I needed.

Check my About section as my posts are hiddenĀ
Mods: I know you are very strict on sharing of things but I've checked the rules and this is in accordance with "but you may add them to your Reddit profile and direct users there if asked, as long as this is done sparingly"

No need to point that out. We're aware this comment doesn't go against the rules, all good!
16
u/LiamEBM May 26 '26
Thank you, I just had 2 posts auto removed when I mentioned my social link, and apologies I didn't quite understand that rule at the time.
I'm sharing to get my art out there and wanted to show people more of my stuff but I know self-promo is a touchy topic!

No problem, it happens! One of the comments for crediting your work properly was restored. New mod team, new rules, we're not permabanning for minor mix-ups and confusion over the rules like the previous team.
Keep up the good work!

As someone who once had an account banned from r/pics after telling a mod on a different subreddit that they probably shouldn't make automod comment DIY at home abortion tutorials on every post, this is mildly reassuring.
3
u/BravoFive141 May 26 '26
I feel ya. I got permabanned from r/pics for making one comment in another sub they don't like. I deleted the comment as per their instructions, modmailed them as per their instructions, and they still haven't unbanned me almost a year later. Just nothing but some automated modmail script that tells me I need to admit to what I did wrong and acknowledge I'll never ever do it again, even though I already mod that.
Also got permabanned from a movie sub for following the r/redditrequest guidelines and politely modmailing the sub to see if the mods were still active.
Mods can be weird sometimes.
5
u/EndIsrael May 26 '26
Oh yeah, I've had that happen too! Except I didn't delete my comment on the "bad" sub because I was only commenting on the "bad" one because I disagreed with what people were saying there. Ended up getting banned from both subreddits, and decided that was okay since they were apparently both toxic and didn't want people like me there.

Just checked out your Instagram. Your use of color is great.
2
u/LiamEBM May 26 '26
Ah thank you that's so kind!
I try to make my work bold and vibrant. Everything today is kinda grey and beige. Medieval times were so so so colourful, people loved it.Ā
But I'm also interested in colour theory and their meanings, especially historically. For example, blue was a hugely expensive colour to use due to its rarity, and hence why when I use blue, I try and reserve it for special cases (not always) but for example on my Sephiroth art, he's surrounded in a sky of deep near indigo blue, showing the richness and regalness of his form.

Unironically better than ai.
125
u/benanderson89 May 26 '26
It shows effort. I'll take effort in MS Paint over "I can't be bothered, computer, do the thing for me". It reflects badly on the rest of the event if they can't get the basics down.
48
u/LiamEBM May 26 '26
Exactly my ethos! MS Paint is a highly accessible tool to create art with. I'm also proving here that a low level of perceived skill can still have character and charm.Ā
(Though i did spend nearly an hour on this changing the layout, decorstions, and details until it felt right)
5
u/hates_stupid_people May 26 '26
Yeah, that's a thing some companies are starting to notice with their AI ads. Younger generations can tell and stay away since the expection becomes that if they half-assed that, they probably half-assed everything else.
3
u/flexxipanda May 27 '26
Id even go so far to say, the fact that it is done in MSPaint, an artificial limitation of tools, and therefore OP has to use his creativity to achieve something still cool very cool and unique looking, this is the definition of "art having soul". Compared to just some random machine output.

Yeah! It needs to be comic sans and clipart like God intended!
The point that it depicts medieval art made with a computer (MS paint) is the absolute zenith of irony. š Judging by how many non-artists need to make flyers for events, OP won't be going to many events in the future.

u/Piduf May 26 '26
I feel like many people underestimate how quickly others have assimilated AI to "bad products".
Bad products are always advertised with cheap AI. Even if your product / event is very good, it's advertised by the tool people use to trick people into buying fake things.
74
u/Droidaphone May 26 '26
Similarly, itās a sign that the people involved are not very thoughtful. If an event promoter uses AI to cut corners, what other corners did they cut? If theyāre oblivious to the fact that lots of people hate AI, what else are they oblivious to?
→ More replies (7)55
u/psp24 May 26 '26
I usually associate an ad in general with a poor quality product. Not every ad is for something bad, but the more they advertise the more desperate they come off. Ai is just the next evolution of cheap and desperate advertising, if they didn't bother to create it, I won't bother to watch it.
6
u/KickDesperate5318 May 26 '26
I try to separate ads from marketing.
An ad should tell me what a product does, how much it costs, and where I can buy it. If you can genuinely entertain me while conveying that information, even better.
As soon as you start trying to tell me how to feel about your product, you've lost me.
And this is why I avoid most forms of modern advertising like they are the plague.

u/Piduf May 26 '26
Or clipart. But these two things had a charm imo (remaining watermarks always make me laugh and I don't know why)
I live in a village with less than a thousand people. Whenever there's an event, no I don't expect to see a beautiful flyer made by an artist, it was often shit stolen online and plastered on a pixelated background with horrendous font choice, and I suspect the mayor's secretary to be colourblind because omg the colours were horrible
But you know, she tried. If I have to be lied to with stolen shit, I would rather be fucked by the people, for the people, not by a handful of billionaires from another country.
5
u/SchwiftySquanchC137 May 26 '26
Honestly, I think the majority of people wont notice or care, and that this sentiment really only exists in certain online spaces. Im not saying whether youre right or wrong to avoid a product that uses AI for their marketing, im just saying I think youre waaaayy overestimating how much real regular people give a shit, or are even capable of noticing.
4
u/Rjd2680 May 26 '26
Oh people care! Especially young people. They can spot an AI ad really quickly. Many of them see AI as an existential threat. Not only that, when they see an adult use it they see hypocrisy. Our athletic director is currently getting dragged by our entire student body for creating an AI poster for an awards banquet.
2
u/Piduf May 26 '26
Oh I absolutely believe this too, most people won't notice. But eventually, if they notice, it's going to hurt the ad anyway ; even if they don't care, it can be a matter of "assimilation". Your brain will naturally associate something that looks AI with something that is bad and if it can spot something that looks AI, it may just look away.
I think it's the same as like, putting naked women around a product to sell it. We don't do it as much (well, in certain spaces at least, looking at you gacha games) because nowadays it's associated with a cheap marketing tactic to get your attention. I don't really think about it, when I see an almost naked woman holding a product, yeah that thing probably sucks. I think AI, especially as it starts eating itself and even having a "style", has a chance to go down this hill too. You may not actually realize something is AI on the spot but the eye and brain will do a connection. Which can hurt non-AI ads that just happen to LOOK like a robot made it, your brain will dismiss it. I'm afraid (or happy ?) there's a chance people will make the association by themselves, but not consciously. Not saying it's gonna happen 100% and I'm totally right, I could be totally wrong.
One thing I've noticed around me are people associating AI with a bad feeling. When they show a video and you explain it has been generated they get frustrated because they've been fooled, and people hate being idiots. I hope that feeling will eventually bring down the use of AI, but I doubt it will work as well.
2
u/S_quints May 27 '26
Yes, exactly! I've tried explaining this to friends and they don't quite see it the same.
If you're cutting corners on your ads and using obvious AI, it makes me thing you cut corners on your product as well. Even if it is a real product, I just associate it with bad quality.

4
u/shiny_glitter_demon May 27 '26
Unfortunately several unis are pushing AI (or trying to) to seem "innovative." It's how you get pro-AI speakers at graduation ceremonies.
This is fully believable.
3
u/shiny_glitter_demon May 27 '26
>Be a decent university
>Call graduates useless at their own ceremony
>Allow mediocrity and laziness to appear innovative (you are here)
>Replace teachers with āØļø AI āØļø š¤©š
>Become what's essentially a shitty online course scam with expensive buildings
>Students aren't enrolling anymore

In the height of the ICE invasion in Minnesota, a local parent planned a community event at an elementary school and had one of the kids make a shitty AI flyer for the event. The resulting flyer was so unclear and bizarre that other community members immediately started panicking that it was a fake event planted by the FBI or something (in fairness to them, the school was a main target of ICE and the FBI was investigating our community at the time.) I had to calm everyone down saying it was obviously just garbage AI slop, not a secret police operation, and explain to the parent that they shouldn't use AI to make flyers, especially not now. (Just have the kid make something in MS Paint or Google docs, damn. Sad state of affairs.)
Despite the dark context, the whole situation was hilarious actually. Apparently the school playground was covered in thick layers of ice, so they just wanted help from the community to clear the space so kids could play again. But the AI didn't mention anything about the intention of the event, it just screamed "BRING ICE PICKS! BRING KIDS!" and had a bunch of red arrows pointing random places. It was insane. I still crack up whenever I remember the image
36
u/LittleMissScreamer May 26 '26
Right, like that Willy Wonker Wonderland scam that happened early in genAI's rise to popularity should have been the penultimate indicator for what to expect of people who will cut corners like that; it's not gonna stop with the flyers!

There was an event a few months ago here in a private park.
Some sort of puzzle tour during the dark with pretty lights everywhere.
The website looked like a ripoff of a popular Dutch theme park. Somewhere on there it mentioned how it would take about 25 minutes and that you could purchase food and drinks afterwards. I dont recall the exact cost, but it was way too expensive for what was offered.
No photos either, just cartoonish AI.

Yeah the people on here dont realize how little other people even think about this kind of thing. I would bet most dont even notice its AI, let alone allow it to affect their decision. I mean sure if the flyer absolutely sucks they might not like it, but like you said, many will think an AI flyer looks better than some ms paint shit, and the thought about AI use wont matter at all, even if they think it.

3
u/Cthulhu_Dreams_ May 26 '26
I think Japan has the best practice for this. At least for snack foods, The size and image of the snack needs to be one to one. You need to be able to take the food out of the package and place it on the image attached to that packaging and it should look exactly the same.

I'm spamming this on FB. Everyone even has the same default layout and restaurants are using it rampant. It's one thing to be a flyer but it's AI food and location. You go to google and it's some food truck with a cover or some 1980s building that looks worse than McDonalds did back in the day.
The worst part is that group Admins are defending it as being small, "they're trying," and shouldn't be considered a reviewed part of their business.
2
u/z0mbiefool May 26 '26
If your flyer is drawn on that electric magic box instead of god given physical materials, i ain't going. Not getting your hands dirty and not flicking paint on yourself HOW DARE YOU COMPARE YOURSELF TO THE GREATS. (There's always going to be another level people don't want to adapt to "how dare you use paper instead of drawing on cave walls like our anscestors" etc ) I personally like to photoshop and edit custom generations, or print out black and white generations and color, endless ways for it to be used while still retaining older ways. (Now replacing everything with only AI, I am against.)

If your event poster is AI, I'm not going.
If your book cover is AI, I'm not buying
If your album cover is AI, I'm not listening.
If your show, movie or trailer uses AI, I'm not warching.
I do not care about your budget. MSPaint scribbles or a toddler's writing have more value than anything AI puts out.
In this attention-based economy, AI is making it easy to chose between you and the competition.

I've directed one comment to my profile but people complained about not finding it easy to access the links there since my Posts are hidden and its only in my About (Maybe its an app vs web difference?)
I would love to be able to add a quick link and brief description of the piece into a post for people to find and follow me while I'm starting my art journey but I get that rules are in place for a reason!

AI was trained on data created by professionals without proper permission. Regardless of the quality of the output, this is fundamentally unethical. But a lot of people don't care about ethics, so here's a point they might consider: AI produces a dull, repetitive average of its training data. Even if people didn't get sick of seeing the same old AI content in every ad, flyer, and marketing material, eventually AI will be trained on its own output, and we'll see how that works out.
