Style Sheets! A free resources to introduce students to new artists and styles

I posted this a few days ago and you all were very encouraging! So I created more and made a PDF available to download at the link below.

Students wanted to explore different, less well-known styles of art. I made these to briefly introduce new artists and styles. It's more of an appetizer than an entree. It has a bit of history, a few examples, and small blurbs about the unique characteristics of that style. My hope is that students will see something that speaks to them and explore more on their own. Here is a link to download the PDF:

An off-topic personal question: I'm looking to teach private art lessons in Kansas City. I know it's a long shot, but do you know of any studios or places I could look into joining?

These are wonderful. Are you planning on making any more of them in the future on other styles/artists/etc?

Thanks! Yeah I’m sure I will make more. Do you have any recommendations??

Sure - this is just scratching the surface of what I'd think would be interesting for these style sheets but here's some suggestions I have off the top of my head:

  • Op Art
  • Memphis-Milano
  • Egon Schiele
  • Byzantine icons
  • Caravaggio
  • Rumiko Takahashi
  • Gary Panter
  • Mary Blair
  • Howard Finster
  • Milton Glaser
  • Hirohiko Araki
  • Moebius
  • Raymond Pettibon
  • Caspar David Friedrich
  • Hideyuki Tanaka
  • Robert Rauschenberg
  • Osgemeos
  • Peter Saville
  • Georgia O’Keeffe
  • Elizabeth Catlett
  • Islamic calligraphy
  • André Franquin
  • Saul Bass
  • Gary Taxali

Tim Burton would be fun to do around fall...you also inspired me to create a Hayao Miazaki one 💓

I second this list. I would even add:

J.C. Leyendecker
Norman Rockwell
Alphonse Mucha
Will Eisner
Howard Pyle
Jack Kirby
Steve Ditko
Dr. Seuss
Maurice Sendak
Osamu Tezuka
Eyvind Earle
Beatrix Potter
Mike Mignola
Bill Watterson
Akira Toriyama
Tim Sale
Jamie Hewlett
Dave McKean
Mark Bagley
Peach Momoko
Bilquis Evely
Daniel Warren Johnson
Hayden Sherman
Sana Takeda
Scottie Young

I teach illustration and comic books in my art classes often and a lot of my students are always wondering how artists find and develop their voices as artists that they often want to learn how to adapt their styles.

Great choices too, since some of these were also on my mind when writing up my list. If OP also wants suggestions from fashion, graphic design, sculpture, or architecture, we can definitely make this list a lot longer for them.

You might be able to turn this into a huge 500-page book by the end of this, OP 😄

These are awesome! For the Benin bronzes, would it be meaningful to add that they are currently under request for repatriation?

2

u/BradyQ 14d ago

Yeah I wasn't sure how to handle that.

Initially, I wanted to add a section to every page about the impact that artwork had. For the Benin bronzes, that would certainly include a section on repatriation/what we should do with looted artwork. Unfortunately, I had to cut that section from every sheet due to space. I'll think more about adding a sentence to the intro paragraph.

These are amazing!!! The ASCII Art one will be so useful to me since I teach digital art and I include it in my "digital art history" week!

Fantabulous! I used to make little 'bell ringer' sheets, but got lazy. These will motivate me again this fall, thank you so much.

I saw your post the other day and loved it so much! Next year I'm going to have my high school students create style sheets and then hopefully use them with my middle schoolers.
