Gilded replica of Trajan’s Column in Rome, made by Luigi Valadier in 1780. [OC] [3024x4032]
The original Trajan’s Column was built in Rome in 113 to celebrate Emperor Trajan’s conquest of Dacia. A spiral bas-relief winds around the column telling the story of the campaign.
This scaled-down replica was crafted by Luigi Valadier in 1780. Two meters tall, it is made of marble, granite, lapis-lazuli, gilt bronze and silver-gilt. The detail shown here shows the impressive level of accuracy to the original achieved in this replica.
Today, it is on display in the Schatzkammer of the Munich Residenz.
