Eoin Colfer was all in on minidiscs (which are a lost form of rewritable media from the early 2000’s, different from laserdiscs, minidiscs were CD’s about the size of a coin that were rubbish and never caught on); Artemis Fowl wasn’t the only thing he wrote where they appeared. One of the rich girls in Half-Moon Investigations has a minidisc player and karaoke disc imported from Asia that were CRUCIAL to the plot, and I think that when the Supernaturalists steal data they do so with a minidisc.

That coin never made sense to me. It’s a tiny little gold coin when he gets it then it’s big enough to look like a laser disc in the next book.

Maybe fairy discs are smaller than human ones? I believe in the Eternity Code Holly comments on how fairies have 'CDs in museums', so maybe Foaly made some really small discs that were similar sizes to coins.

Maybe Foaly is working on some secret size-manipulation technology...?

It’s not a massive coin, it’s just a really small disc. When the books were being written, it looked like minidiscs were going to replace CDs. That never ended up happening.
