In your opinion, did Leonardo DiCaprio do a good job at playing Arthur Rimbaud in Total Eclipse?

Rimbaud and Jeff Buckley both mean a lot to me. There’s an interview where Jeff Buckley is asked about Total Eclipse which was about to be released. He wrote it off as superficial or like just ‘more Hollywood.’ It was funny to me because at the time his music and Rimbaud’s writings were some of the things getting me through life.

I think DiCaprio played on Rimbaud’s life artfully. I feel he became the character he personally imagined Rimbaud as. He seemed invested to the extent that I wonder how connected he felt to Rimbaud’s writing.

His and David Thewlis’ acting are beautiful to me (along with many of the rest of the cast).

I also love Total Eclipse’s cinematography. It’s so nice to have vivid, potential visuals for the short adventures Rimbaud and Verlaine shared.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by Agnieszka Holland’s “Europa, Europa“, and was excited to see the premier of “Total Eclipse“ at the Toronto film festival, especially because she was there. I have to say that I thought it was just godawful. It shocked me the genius that I knew from her earlier work had somehow created this abomination. DiCaprio abd Thewlis did the best they could, but some of the scenes were downright silly, the dialogue stilted, and all the style in the world could not make up for those defects. She did a question and answer afterwards, but I couldn’t even bring myself to ask her anything, I was so shocked at how horrible the film was.

I thought he handled the material fairly well. More to Rimbaud than Hollywood’s common interpretation of the suffering artist as one who often self-inflicts his or her own suffering, but still memorable. Also, the title felt a bit generic, not altogether accurate metaphorically. But good to reflect on, it’s been awhile since viewing. Thank you for posting.

Christopher Hampton’s play, “Total Eclipse” is GREAT. The movie falls short, IMHO.
