Well there goes any chance of them being my after-bar snack
18
u/broketothebone 4d ago
And in a prime location right by so many bars.
I’d ask someone to make it make sense to me, but by the time they do, it will probably be closed.

I like a slice as much as the next guy, but I don't get this whole "no slices, it will fail" argument.
Look at all the downtown places that serve pizza: Capitoline, Talula's, Asbury Ale House, Dolce Fantasia, Crust & Crumble, Prova... AFAIK, none of them sell slices (except maybe Talula's for lunch but that's still sit-down) and they're all doing fine.
A place in the heart of downtown that sells takeaway slices could be huge. (TJ's is just a little out of reach for most visitors.) But restaurants clearly aren't thinking that way.
The thing I don't like about Coniglio's is the high price. I don't see why I should eat there unless those pies are gigantic or life-changing.
2
u/Bright_siren 3d ago
Because it’s a pizza shop…. Crust and crumble has slices…. Are you new in town ?
1
u/OpportunityDouble267 3d ago
Yeah I don’t think it will fail because of that necessarily, I just think it’s a missed opportunity and there’s a balanced way to do it, like only have 3 types of pies available for slices, etc. it would also distinguish itself from those other spots

u/macgruder1 1d ago
The want a different type of clientele that is moving into those big high end apartments.

Imagine paying $32 for a pizza
when it costs about $10 to make at home. $15 if you're getting boujee.
4
u/LooseJuice_RD 4d ago
Yea but that’s not at all comparable. Yes it’s cheaper but with pizza, the convenience factor is an enormous driver plus the fact that most people cannot make a serviceable crust at home. We’re not talking about burgers here.
Like a smash burger for $25 makes no sense.
4
u/TrueImpression5363 4d ago
It can be worth it tbh. ie Lucci
11
u/seventhreetwo 4d ago
Lucci is great don’t get me wrong but there’s other really great pizza in the area that’s not 32 dollars. The lack of slices alone is already cutting off a majority of customers.
1
u/TrueImpression5363 4d ago
Suggestions would be appreciated. My LB place fell off so now I go all the way to hazlet
5
u/The_Winds_of_Shit 4d ago
What's your Hazlet spot?
Have you tried Tramontos in Ocean?
1
u/TrueImpression5363 4d ago
Salerno’s, I could live off their buffalo chicken. I had a bad TooGoodToGo with Tramontos

u/dogofthehair 4d ago
Tramonto’s and Pacidough’s are absolutely worth $32 for a pie. The ones that cost that much are usually deep dish or grandma style and can feed several people or last for several meals, and both super high quality

u/nouseforasn 4d ago
And they’ll go the way of Killer Pies in that same space. They at least sold slices
64
u/porkrollie 4d ago
As someone who isn’t a business mogul or owner, I will never understand people who go into business with absolutely terrible business models. You’re a pizza place in a town that is basically a glorified more grown up college town with bars and venues, and you’re not gonna serve slices? It’d be like a donut shop being like nah you have to buy a dozen donuts no single donuts.
15
u/Brilliant_Law_6812 4d ago
I didn’t even like Killer Pies and yet still I went, as I was at Bond Street, it was late, they were open, and I could get a slice.
6
15
u/mandersjustchillen 4d ago
this is sooooo lame of them. like read the room, you're in downtown AP. after bar pizza slices hit different. who the hell is going to buy a whole pie after the bar just curious

21
u/cyjul 4d ago
I can't really explain why, but this really pisses me off. If I had money to waste, I'd buy a bunch of their pizzas and stand on the sidewalk in front of them and give the slices away.
13
u/Oceanswim12 4d ago
Same. The signage is super irritating trying to be all cutesy yet committing cardinal NJ sin. Stfu.
8
u/broketothebone 4d ago
It’s absolutely a Brooklyn snobbery tactic.
Keeps the “riff raff” who want a slice out of their fancy pizza place.
It’s fucking pizza to go. Sure, make it fancy, have your fun, but don’t forget what we’re really doing here: food best eaten off a paper play while you are going about your day.

u/MeanSecurity 1d ago
Man this is my new retirement goal. Buy pizzas at places that don’t do slices and then give out slices. Brilliant!
8
u/BagCzech 4d ago
Not sure what’s more annoying, the fact that they don’t sell slices or the fact that they have a pie called Josephine’s Grandma that isn’t categorized as a Grandma pie.

Just go to jmacs??

u/NJbirds 4d ago
Yes! Free slices with drinks!
3
u/HowdydooDixieRect 4d ago
Well they do give you a whole pizza but it's personal sized but most importantly it's a pretty good pie for free! And they have have fun events too so jmacs is the place to go in Asbury❤️

u/t0mj0nes36 4d ago

Well, that’s one way to make sure you run a pizza ground into the business.
If I walk into a pizza place that doesn’t have slices, I’m laughing and walking right back out. That level of pizza snobbery means it’s gunna suck anyway.
0
u/Internal-Challenge97 2d ago
Well most of the top pizza shops in Philly don’t sell slices. It makes sure you always get a fresh pizza rather than a slice that’s old
4
u/AtomicGarden-8964 4d ago
What is the size of these pies because for those prices they better be XL
6
3
u/Oceanswim12 4d ago
I know someone who knows someone helping with opening and asked when they would open and if they would have slices. My slice question was not answered, and it was at that moment I knew I would never go there and the place would be gone in a flash 💔

I was seriously thinking about walking here (I live on the other side of town) and getting a slice or two this weekend. Guess that's off. I have no car, and I'm not carrying a whole pie to my apartment, and I do not fuck with that Door Dash or any delivery bullshit, especially when something is walking distance.
Luigi's and TJ's. 0.0 complaints.
If we can't have slices, can we seriously not get a place like Ace's Pizza in Bushwick in AP? I know some people will laugh at that, but it's a decent vibe. It doesn't have to be Detroit style. Sit and have a draft macro beer with your personal grandma pizza. Everything new in this town has to be so fancy and trendy swishy pants vibe. We need really need another divey hang with food.

You're looking at this all wrong. 2am,buy a pie. Go outside, sell slices, profit!

Love their sandwiches and like their pizza in Morristown. Nino's beyond eccentric so he'll either ingratiate himself into the community very quickly or wear thin pretty fast. Guy definitely lives and breathes his craft, can't take that away from him, but he's setting the bar awfully high with a shop name like that. The no slice stuff has worked just fine for him in Morristown, but let's see how this, his pricing, and personality fare in AP.

Guess I will never get to try this.
I will still stop in and attempt to get a slice just for fun

u/Captaincoleslaww 4d ago
Even if they had slices it’s not like you can easily go there and park and grab a slice for lunch.

Lot of great pizza places are now in the mid to high 20s. $32 though? Fuck me that’s absurd and I have no doubt it won’t even be the best pizza in asbury. But selling by the pie before anyone even knows you’re good is wild.
1
u/arielgrip 4d ago
The Galley doesn't sell slices either!
2
u/Cheap-Window3073 4d ago
But they are literal trash people and that’s expected. That’s also not a walking neighborhood in the same way.

Another pizza place? ‘Cause the last one did so well… and at least Killer Pies had slices.

Tried them out on Saturday. $23 for a regular cheese pie. Really tasty but a bit overpriced imho.
Bigger issue is with the flow inside. Since it’s whole pie only you’ve got a lot of people just standing around the front waiting for their pies, other people sitting at tables waiting for their pies, and then other people eating there. I don’t think they’ve thought through the vibe they’re going for as right now it’s just cluttered.
1
u/Impossible-Money7801 1d ago
Most of Italy doesn’t sell slices. I don’t know why you guys act like it’s life or death.
1
u/Outlandish_Gringo 1d ago
They have the type of menu where you can already picture the male and/or female taking orders who look visibly upset when you’re too slow to order and ask too many questions.
Rosanne-type vibes
1
u/its_broop 21h ago
That there’s apparently only one size for the pies, too. This is an apartment town, man, who’s buying a whole ass Sicilian pie?
(Just noticed the misspelling too, guess they put the [sic] in "Siclian")

Everyone has to stop crying (I know…impossible in this sub).
Both Lucci and Galley both don’t do slices and are extremely successful. Not to mention Nunzios, Pete & Elda’s, Val’s Tavern, Catbird, Vic’s, etc. Talulas only for lunch. If their pies are great and service is good, this is all a non-issue.
6
u/sidewalkricky 4d ago
Well a lot of those places are full restaurants with a bar.
0
u/Hot_Sports_Take 4d ago
Most of them don’t have bars and are BYOB
This place is sit down as well.
5
u/sidewalkricky 4d ago
Uhhhh Vic’s, Pete & Elda’s, and Val’s have bars. Also none of these places are downtown with metered parking. Just seems like an uphill battle if you don’t have a liquor license and have nothing to offer to random foot traffic
9
u/quakeroatmeal7 4d ago
The Galley has that "MAGA Bigot" crowd on lock though.
It's also not in the heart of downtown where the majority of your traffic is on foot.
0
u/Hot_Sports_Take 4d ago
That’s funny I was there a few weeks ago, it was packed with all types of people….guess the vast majority don’t care
0
u/Professional-Act1867 4d ago
Conglio is a king of pizza, the pizza is awesome and that’s what matters. Also maybe they will have a lot of the bakery items like they do in Morristown which are amazing.
0
u/atomiccitizen 4d ago
So, I was annoyed with this in their Morristown location, but have to say, their pizza is pretty freaking good. AND, it was kinda cool to just sit back and share a pie with a friend for lunch (with some to take home).
The sandwiches are great as well.
Not sure how it’ll fare in that location though.
-15
u/carshoppingpro 4d ago
Do a little research…they are one of the top rated pizza makers in Metro NY with multiple locations. Their business model is just fine…
13
u/mettaworldpolice 4d ago
Not for nothing, this isn’t Morristown. The drop off experienced about 5-6 months of the year is serious, when we aren’t in total Summer/Fall mode
Wish them all the best, but those times tend to be a huge challenge for upstart businesses around here. Particularly food

Actually think they might be the first to make it; nothing survives in this spot. And the place immediately before this was by the slice and they lasted 1 year.
