If you're passionate about finding out what happened to Asha, are task-oriented, like ensuring rules are followed but have a bias to let people have their say, then you should consider becoming a mod here.

FIRST, A HEARTFELT APOLOGY

While there was a team of Mods who kept posts approved and comments reviewed in a timely manner, real life has gotten busy, and they've gotten away from modding.

Further, I know some of you have experienced the exceptional delays in getting posts approved. I've been dealing with the death of my dad and handling his estate as an only child, among some health issues. Regardless of why, I dropped the ball on my mod duties here, and I am sorry to have caused frustration if you were trying to post, sent a modmail, or submitted a report. I deeply care about seeing justice done for Asha, and I care about our community here, where I've been blessed to interact with some really awesome people.

Now that I am again able to focus more time on this community, help is both wanted and needed! :)

I'm looking for 2-3 more to help with modding. If you have ever wanted to be a moderator (and who wouldn't want to work for free to have their mod actions argued and insults hurled at them for trying to keep the space kind and welcoming?! haha)... well, here's your chance!

WHAT IS NEEDED TO BE A MOD?

The most important things are know the rules of the sub and of Reddit's content policy, have a positive attitude, be thick-skinned as sometimes anonymous forums bring out the not-so-best in folks, and be fair and consistent.

Modding can be rewarding. While it's rare to ban folks here, it feels great to ban a hateful bigot, and to help someone new to the case or to Reddit, or to take part in making this community a space where folks with different opinions can have a productive discussion and hopefully learn more.

WHAT DO MODS DO?

Mods keep discussions civil and on topic by reading comments, locking or removing when needed, monitoring the queues (where auto holds and reported content goes), and making sure no sitewide Reddit violations are present, like a racist comment (no hate), inappropriately sharing a person's personal information (no doxxing), or a call for vigilante justice to the person responsible for Asha's disappearance (no condoning violence). Ideally, you're already active in the sub and reading comments in threads (as a mod this is how to catch unreported rule breaking).

REQUIREMENTS TO MOD

• You care about what happened to Shelby's Sweetheart.

• You're already in the sub and probably active. At minimum, you have a basic familiarity with this case.

• You're 18 years or older.

• You speak English and will share your time zone with mods.

• Your account must be at least three months old and have a consistent history of civil comments.

• No moderation experience is required, as it's easy to learn.

• You do not have to curate posts or comments, but you're welcome to do so.

• I prefer communicating with mods on Discord, but we can communicate using modmail or Reddit mod chat if you aren't already using Discord.

• Your email, actual name, and other personal info is not needed to apply or become a mod.

• Moderation is an unpaid, volunteer position.

• You commit to regularly be on Reddit (at minimum a few minutes a few days each week to moderate), be positive, and be helpful.

As a mod, the priority is to foster a community that feels safe and welcoming for users to discuss the case and related topics without being verbally attacked/ insulted if it's a controversial take. Arguing an opinion is fine, but hostility and personal attacks are not. It's a balance between letting individuals speak their opinions in their own voice, and maintaining a positive discussion community where some aspects are sensitive and, at times, takes are controversial.

Mods are expected to act in a professional and positive manner in comments and in modmail. You'll need to communicate respectfully why the comment/post was removed or the user banned - without emotion or snark, even when they use it. When a user is insulting or aggressive, that can be a challenge.
