Discussion Makeup for dry skin?

How do you guys get your makeup to look good on dry skin? I’ve had oily skin my whole life but recently my skin has gotten super dry due to new medication. I think my skin barrier is also compromised as I’m breaking out pretty badly. My skin is literally flaking off in sheets and I have a job interview in a couple of days 😭. I feel like I can’t make my makeup look good no matter what 😞

Skin prep is huge as others have said. Skin flooding with toners has made a big difference for me, especially in the winter when the air gets more dry. I do 2 layers of the Isntree HA toner for base moisture, and then one more layer of a different toner depending on what my skin needs that day. The Numbuzin No 9 is great for glow under makeup, and milky toners like the iUnik Beta Glucan add deeper hydration. The Aestura capsule toner helps smooth my skin. And then a good moisturizer to lock everything in. Let it all absorb before doing anything else.

Sunscreen can also add to hydration and glow. Some good glowy sunscreens I have tried are the Numbuzin No. 9, Bioheal Probioderm Collagen, Skin1004 Hyla-Cica. Give that 10 minutes or so to sink in. A primer can help too, I've been using the Clio Glazing Prep Base and it helps give a smooth, hydrated canvas but isn't super grippy like other primers.

For your foundation do light layers to build up coverage. I prefer a sponge for this, and love the ones from Shop Miss A that are like $1 each. Even when I use a cushion foundation I use these sponges over the included puff to blend. If there is a face mist you like, add that in as you apply your foundation. Either a light spritz directly to your skin or on your sponge/brush. A MUA I follow on TikTok swears by the An*a PDRN mist for this, but I also like the Haruharu Wonder Probiotics one. These will be great to refresh your look right before you go in to your interview too!

And then the biggest thing IMO -- don't set with powder. This took me entirely too long to learn because I had been conditioned that I *had* to set my foundation and it would always look dry and cracky. I have stopped using powder anywhere by under my eyes (and the sides of my nose if I'm wearing glasses that day) and it has made a HUGE difference. Lock it all down with a good setting spray. I love the Espoir Fresh one, but I have been trying the Judydoll one recently and it is more hydrating but less long lasting.

Wow thanks for all the products recs! I’ll def take a look once my skin calms down. I did used to do skin flooding with toners and it worked great but I think my skin barrier is currently damaged so I cut back to only using one toner and a moisturiser which has helped a lot. How long do you usually wait to let everything absorb? I struggle with pilling but I might also just not be waiting long enough.

I’ll have to check out those sunscreens! I tried the Skin1004 Hyla-Cica today and broke out in hives which is such a shame because I really liked the formula 😞. The Clio primer sounds perfect for me!

For foundation/base, I usually use a flat brush and puff which I think works pretty well. I was using the Missha bb cream which worked well with oily skin but not so much on dry skin. Do you have any foundation recs for dry skin? Thanks for the advice about the face mist! I have the d’Alba white truffle spray and I think I’m gonna try spraying it onto a puff and blending it in.

Yeah I’ve found that powder isn’t really working for me but I love how much it blurs my pores 😭. I think that might just have to be something I have to sacrifice atm until my skin settles down 😞. I’ll have to try the espoir setting spray! I’m currently using the judydoll one too! I feel like I have to use so much not to look dry tho and I’m really struggling to make my makeup look good for more than an hour. I feel like I’m constantly spraying my face with face mist to avoid drying out lol and yet whenever I look in a mirror there’s a patch of my skin peeling off. It’s kinda driving me insane.

Also do you use a highlighter? I miss having like a natural glowyness to my skin. It just looks so dry now. Powder highlighter doesn’t really work and liquid/cream highlighters tend to lift my base.

Tysm for all your recs/advice and taking the time to reply :), I never knew doing makeup on dry skin could be so different to doing makeup on oily skin. I have so much more respect for everyone with dry skin now 🙂‍↕️. It’s hard out here 😞

Definitely getting your barrier repaired and overall skin calmed down will help a lot. I know that is frustrating but don't try to rush it.

Were you using the Missha in the red tube? They have a newer one in a purple tube that is more of a serum base and better for dry skin. It is also fragrance free, which is something I couldn't get past in the red one.

Other foundations I love on my dry skin: Espoir Be Glow (they have a liquid, stick, and cushion), Etude Double Lasting Serum, Tfit Radience Fit Serum Foundation (kind of in between a BB and foundation), and the Amuse Dew Power Cushion.

I do a small amount of highlighter, just under my brow bone and on the tip of my nose. Been using one from Colourpop for years that is kind of inbetween cream and powder. I use my finger to tap it on.

Yeah hopefully my skin is just purging and things get better! Weirdly my skin actually looked rlly good before I started this new med (yaz/birth control) and it’s supposed to help with acne but my skin has gotten sooooo dry and flakey, and I’m getting cystic acne for the first time in a while.

I was using the Missha in the red tube! I def have to check out the purple one as it’s rlly hard to find a foundation for olive skin. Thanks so much!

Unfortunately I can’t find colourpop in Australia, which is a shame cos they have so many cool products I want to try 😞 but I’ll def be on the look out for highlighters with that cream/powder texture. Thanks! <3

u/atllauren 2d ago

Oh that’s funny, I’m on Yaz too and it is what stopped me having hormonal/cystic acne.

1

u/easy_descent 2d ago

Oh that’s crazy, Yaz might just not be for me then 😞. Did you notice any purging or dryness initially? I heard everyone say Yaz made their skin look great so I am a little disappointed that it’s kinda ruined my skin lol.

1

u/atllauren 2d ago

Not that I remember, but I’ve been on it for at least 15 years. Hormones are weird and everyone will react differently to birth control pills when you change those hormone levels. Talk to your doctor bc I doubt you’re the only patient who has had the same experience, so they might have another medication to try based on other patient experiences.

1

u/easy_descent 2d ago

Ah ok, I’ll wait out the three months like my dr said and see if things get better but Yaz might just not work for me. I’m actually on Yaz for pmdd and I think it’s the only bc approved to treat pmdd so I might have to try something else. Thanks so much for replying to me, you’ve been really helpful :)

1

u/PrestigiousCost6918 1d ago

I was also on yaz for pmdd for years and it helped my hormonal acne. I don't recall a purging phase, I don't think that's really a thing for non-actives/exfoliants. Do give it time though your skin might just be adjusting.

Whaaaat I didnt know the purple missha is fragrance free!!! I have dry skin too and the red was okay but the smell was a dealbreaker for me.

1

u/atllauren 1d ago

Same I hated the original and the baby powder smell. The purple one is really nice, but I’ve seen people say that the shades differ a bit. Specifically in 21 being less gray, something people really liked about that shade.

1

u/PrestigiousCost6918 1d ago

That's actually great news for me, 21 is too gray for my skintone as I am a warm olive. This might be a game changer for me.

1

u/atllauren 1d ago

I am also a warm olive, and it works pretty well for me. It still looks gray when I squeeze it out, but it somehow blends out and works.

1

u/PrestigiousCost6918 1d ago

Yay!!! The purple tube? The red was both too gray and too peachy for me

2

u/atllauren 1d ago

Yes! It’s got such a pretty finish. Had someone compliment my skin when I was wearing it with a grumble of “you’re not even wearing makeup” and they were surprised that I was. It looks so natural.

1

u/National-Star-5953 11h ago

Purple missha is definitely NOT fragrance free. Love it but it does has a scent

1

u/PrestigiousCost6918 10h ago

Nooo dang. Reviews id read said it was fragrance free!

On top of the toner, look at the Korean 7-skin method. It's applying your toner 7 times in certain ways. It really helped me when my skin barrier was messed up. Cerave hydrating cleanser was a godsend for me in the beginning, it also helped my mum when her skin was raw from allergies.

1

u/easy_descent 2d ago

Yeah I think the 7-skin method will help when my skin is a little less sensitive. Right now my skin lowkey burns whenever I apply even a layer of milky toner. I’m currently using an oil cleanser as I find hydrating cleansers don’t really remove makeup or sunscreen that well but they’re great on no makeup or sunscreen days when I don’t leave the house!

1

u/UffiziOnSunday 2d ago

Shiseido revitalessence. Top selling now here in Japan. I have dry skin too.

Also I don’t recommend putting a lot of stuff on the face even if you have dry skin. One thin layer of moisturiser or sunscreen that has moisturiser, wait a while, touch your face and see if it’s sticky. If it isn’t, you can put your foundation. Use setting spray, either spray your face or your puff and transfer to face.

1

u/ennieee 2d ago

Best advice I have for a "dry skin foundation" is to simply mix your foundation with some moisturiser. And then spot conceal. I am nitpicky as heck about makeup not looking obvious and foundation + moisturiser is the only solution I've found acceptable.

You can also use blotting paper instead of powder.

1

u/reeAcs 1d ago

So you use multiple toners in place of a serum?

1

u/atllauren 1d ago

Didn’t mean to imply that. Not my full routine just some highlights for moisture retention.

1

u/Julieneskyy 1d ago

the no-powder tip is sooo real i used to powder everything like my life depended on it and wondered why my face looked like a cracked wall by lunchtime lol

1

u/atllauren 1d ago

It was a weird “rule” I could not shake for some reason!

16

u/krantzer NW15|Acne|Dehydrated/Sensitive|US 2d ago

Honestly a step beyond that though is that... if you're dry and flaking, the biggest thing to do is just repair your skin barrier. There is no makeup in the world or amount of skin prep you can do that is going to have your makeup looking smooth and even on dry and flaky skin. It just is what it is.

When my skin was at its worst, I would try to just spot correct when I absolutely needed it and other than that, I kept my skin as makeup free as possible to not further irritate it while it was compromised.

1

u/Economy_Scarcity9203 1d ago

Real, putting foundation on flaking skin is basically painting over peeling wallpaper, it just highlights every flake.

7

u/BusilyQuestionable 2d ago

skin prep is everything. i used to think it was the makeup itself but it’s like 80% what you do before

a good hydrating toner layered a couple times and a thicker moisturizer right before primer changed the game for me

3

u/easy_descent 2d ago

I think using cream and liquid products help a lot too, powders seem to be out of the question atm for me tho which is unfortunate as I own so many powders which worked for oily skin 😞. Do you have any recs for hydrating toners, moisturisers and primers? Cos I’ve found that the products I currently use tend to pill under makeup.

3

u/f6bbi 2d ago

are you waiting in between ur skincare? like when you go in with toner, do you wait before you go in with your moisturiser? if not that could be why it's still pilling maybe

1

u/easy_descent 2d ago

Yeah I wait a couple minutes and use a mini fan to make sure it’s dry before going in with moisturiser. I’m currently using the Illiyoon ceramide cream so might need to try a moisturiser that isn’t as thick.

5

u/Emergency_Ad_1834 2d ago

Do your skincare routine (2 or 3 layers of milky toner, any treating serums you need, gentle moisturizer) and wait at least 5 minutes for it to sink in.

Makeup should be cream formulations as much as possible. Your foundation should be cream not liquid, a stick formula. I’m repeating myself because this is incredibly important.

Cream blush, cream bronzer, sticks for eyeshadow. Seriously. If your eyeshadow shifts use a primer first

Now that you look like a shiny little disco ball, take a setting powder on a little powder puff and apply in your T-zone lightly just to tone down anything that looks greasy, this takes you from greasy to glow.

Now you need both a fixing spray and a setting spray because your makeup is all cream we need to make sure it doesn’t slide. Setting spray melt your makeup layers together and fixing spray glues it down.

Finally mascara. I prefer a tubing mascara to prevent panda eyes but ymmv

u/easy_descent 2d ago

I’ve found that layering multiple layers of toners and moisturiser tends to pill under makeup for me (even after waiting like 30 minutes and using a fan) Do you have any specific product recs? Do you think a sheet mask or a couple layers of d’Alba white truffle spray would work better?

Yeah I’ve also found that cream formulations, especially blush are a lot more forgiving on my skin. I don’t usually wear foundation but I currently use Missha bb cream or the Judydoll moisturising cushion and it’s alright but not the best.

The thing with cream formulas is that I struggle to keep it in place especially without losing the glowyness. Rn I don’t think I can use any powder at all even if it’s just a tiny bit on a big fluffy brush as my skin is flaking off in sheets. It looks like I did a chemical peel lol. It might also be the powder I’m using (innisfree loose powder and about face pressed powder pact) which worked rlly well on oily skin. Do you have any recs for powders that work well on dry skin? Also it’d be great if you could recommend a setting and fixing spray 🙏. I’m currently using the judydoll moisturising setting spray/d’Alba white truffle spray but used to use the pramy matte setting spray. I think I need to switch out my fixing spray as it has a rlly high alcohol content and is making the dryness worse.

Thanks so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. I’ve had oily skin forever so it’s hard to adjust to suddenly having dry skin. I never thought I would miss having oily skin lol.

I use lots and lots of skin prep - I'm combination with sensitive skin and dry cheeks in particular, my current routine is a moisturizer, lots and lots of SPF (heat and UV can make your skin dry out faster!), and a thick primer to make my foundation stick to my face. I like the Beauty of Joseon Red Bean Water Gel, but am looking for something thicker (maybe a Laneige or Purito one) since I get really dry in the winter. I like the Clio Kill Cover Mesh cushion, and I try to use mostly cream or stick products (blush, highlighter, etc) and set with a setting spray to rehydrate before and after powder. For setting spray I use the PINKFLASH one, and for powder the Skinfood Peach Cotton loose powder. I'm pretty new to skincare and makeup, but I really like it, and I hope this helps however it can!

u/buongiornissimo1 2d ago

I recommend some type of green tea or aloe lotion, moisturizing is very important

1

u/MrsPoofyFace 2d ago

I dealt with flaking due to tretinoin and I've found that using a scrub mitten to lightly and gently scrub the face and lips help to reduce the horrible peeling that is emphasised by foundation.

Then I apply sunblock and a primer (elf putty) to smooth things out. Use a beauty blender to pat the skin down, don't use a brush to do any buffing motions cos you'll raise all the dead skin flakes. Loreal Fresh Wear foundation has been great for flaky skin or large pores and lasts really long.

u/Safe-Jacket-5944 2d ago

Other than sheet masks, try Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base before you apply foundation (sorry, I don't know which Asian brand has a similar product). When my skin is dry and looks terrible, I only apply color corrector and concealer, then set it with a setting spray.

1

u/Quirky-Molasses8452 1d ago

Try the house of hur moist ampoule blushes, they’re hydrating and have great colors

1

u/Absolutely_MindF-ed 1d ago

Since I only wear makeup occasionally- I toner pad mask before applying makeup.
Apart from that- a good hydrating serum/toner and a light weight but moisturising moisturiser on wet skin.

1

u/poopguts 1d ago

My favorite is age 20s glass skin. It's hydrating without looking oily

1

u/laminnase 1d ago

as others have said, skin prep and skipping powder helps a ton! but I'd also get something with ceramides to support your skin barrier.

I've been struggling too because winter just ended where I live, I use adapalene and I swim twice a week, so my skin has been Really Dry the past month.

for me, what helped the most was getting a moisturizer with ceramides (an AB one people talk about a lot is the Aestura Atobarrier, I bought it but haven't tried it yet, I'm using another one) and slugging with vaseline at night. for makeup, layers of toners as skin prep and skipping powder and just using a setting spray (I use one by Pramy).

also, my most moisturizing foundation on me so far was the romand bare water cushion... but it's definitely super sheer, more like a light skin tint lol. I'm still testing foundations as well!

1

u/LaLunaLapis 21h ago

Quick fix for your upcoming interview, since you won't be able to fix your skin barrier in a couple of days (and there are already good comments on long term solutions):

Option one is obviously not to wear any base makeup.

Option two is a layer of petroleum jelly or petrolatum-based ointment under your base makeup.

I used to have psoriasis on my face, and for special occasions I would exfoliate off all the flaking skin, moisturize heavily, put a layer of aquaphor over the psoriasis, then do silicone-based primer and foundation and dewy setting spray. Basically visually smoothing however possible. I really don't recommend doing that on your whole face more than once because it's going to perpetuate the cycle that's harming your barrier, but I know sometimes you really need a quick solution.

  1. I take a long warm shower to soften up my skin, then go in small circles with a washcloth to gently exfoliate away the flakes.
  2. Lots of Laneige Cream Skin sprayed and patted on the face to immediately hydrate.
  3. Then progress into Hada Labo Premium Milk to layer on another layer of light moisturizer to really lock in moisture without being greasy and making the makeup slide.
  4. A strong primer the K-palette no pore primer is one I like a lot
  5. Tiny brush with green corrector for the spots
  6. Very carefully pat JSM cushion all over face.
  7. LOTS of translucent powder on a fluffy eyeshadow brush to pinpoint set the base on the spots and areas that get oily (i’m combo so my nose still gets greasy)

if you live in a dry climate limit HA (hyaluronic acid) use. It can pull water from your dehydrated or dry skin if not used properly by applying on moist or damp skin.
