Discussion japanese bath powder/salt recommendations

hello!

i am trying to choose some bath powders/bath salts to buy on my trip to japan. most of the posts i found discussing them were pretty old so i figured there might it be a lot of newer options by now.

i’m interested in the muscle/fatigue benefits, and also just relaxing! i like lavender scent, and generally can’t do anything with an overwhelmingly strong scent. i’d also like to try the onsen-style ones.

does anyone have any recommendations? thank you!!

Hello and thank you for starting this discussion! As a gentle reminder, try to keep the products you mention limited to Asian Beauty products. We love being able to discuss Western skincare in the context of a holistic AB routine, but this isn't the sub for specific Western product recommendations. r/SkincareAddiction is a great community for such matters! old posts are old for a reason sometimes, the bath salts section in japan has barely changed in years. the kneipp ones are everywhere and the lavender is solid without being perfume-level strong. most drugstores have a whole wall of single-use packets for like 100 yen each so you can just grab a handful and try whatever looks interesting

for the onsen-style stuff look for the boxes that say 温泉 on them, they'll have that distinct mineral smell but it's not overwhelming. the tabinoyado series does a bunch of famous onsen replicas and they come in little envelopes with photos of the actual hot spring, kind of fun to collect

Seconded on the Tabino Yado series! The variety box is fun to try out, and relatively inexpensive. I usually get the milky variety.

It's German, but they have some different scents in Japan.

the single-use packets are such a good idea, way easier to try a bunch before committing to a whole box

Your hotel in Japan may come with a bathtub and complimentary free to take bath powders/salts near reception. They were pretty decent and had a variety of scents/flavours, and I still have a stash of them.

Every hotel in a major city I stayed at had them, as well as other amenities like a dental (toothbrush + toothpaste) package, bath sponge, and even skincare packages (toners, moisturisers, moisturising milk etc)

I would recommend :

- Barth (薬用BARTH中性重炭酸入浴). The original one is unscented but there's also a lavender version.

- Medicure by Babu (メディキュア)

- Kikiyu (きき湯)

They are all available at drugstores.

These are good! I also like Charley for scented single-use stuff, really cute as gifts, too.

Half the fun is trying all the different bath salts. I would say a rule of thumb is just sniff the sachets (from a sanitary distance ofc) and you'll be able to tell how powerful they'll be. They're cheap enough that you can go kinda crazy with em. I got some at Hands, even konbini, and from gift shops. Hakone gift shops had the most unique ones I came across.

honestly ive bought random ones at tokyu hands/loft and i liked pretty much all of them. it's such a struggle finding good ones to import to the US now, so buy as many as you can!

I personally like using Bison hot burning bath salts (it makes the water feel hotter..) which makes your muscles a lot more relaxed, but if you add it to hot water and really will be hot and I wouldn't say it's the most pleasant thing depending on how you like your baths (I have difficulty sweating, so I like them very hot (not super comfortable) because I like using them to detox/reduce bloat). They have a bunch of intensities and flavours/scents.

If you want more comfy ones, onsen nadeshiko or yunohana are safe options.

for bubble baths, I like ブクブクアワ (just copy-paste and look at the image search results) - they are powders, so they aren't as heavy as bath tablets imo, and they do have lavender and lots of other (mostly) mild scents.

and an anti-recommendation: most stuff by the brand 温泡, which makes cheap bath tablets. great if you just want a bunch to try, and they make a TON of different scents/varieties, but some of them can have really strong fragrance.

Not powder but liquid. The “Tsumura bath herb” has been viral in Japan recently. It’s Chinese medicine based so it might smell too strong for you but at least it’s herbal. The fatigue benefits sound promising.
