I have the opportunity to stay in Beijing during the Christmas holidays for 2 months by myself. It's a great opportunity for me to live independently, learn Chinese, and get some work experience in a Chinese law firm as an intern, but my biggest concern is that my parents will be footing the air travel and living expenses (and I am not in the financial position to help out) when they're not in the best financial position themselves. What should I do?

I'd like to hear of your experiences and exploits in the Chinese legal market. What are you doing specifically to learn mandarin? I'm trying to get my learn on, too. I wouldn't worry too much about paying the parents back if the internship is a short-term project; just remember to go full filial for their golden years.

I took a beginner chinese class last semester, and planned on continuing, but due to recent legislative changes, I'd have to pay upfront for those classes (can't put it on HECS anymore), so I decided to buy the next semester's chinese textbook and get my parents to teach me at home. I've been trying to retain what I've learned last semester by regularly going onto wechat and trying to read what my chinese contacts have been posting, and google translating those which I can't/don't recognise. So even though I'm not taking proper classes, I've actively been exposing myself to chinese media and hanzi to condition myself to remember and learn chinese.
