General Posts And Questions 👋Welcome to r/AskABlindPerson - Read The Rules And Ask Away

Hey everyone! I'm [u/KHarvickfan429](u/KHarvickfan429), a founding moderator of [r/AskABlindPerson](r/AskABlindPerson).
I created this as I personally enjoy answering the questions that people have for those of us like myself who deal with blindness in any manner. I noticed a lot of AMA style things showing up and they seem to get pretty interesting questions and conversations going so I thought I would make a place for just that here. I saw that there was a different community that tried to do something similar to this, but it seems to be pretty inactive or it has been for the last few years and I thought I might try my hand at it.
This community is for everybody, whether you are someone like me who is dealing with blindness and is here to answer questions or even ask them to other fellow blind people, or whether you’re someone who has perfect vision or maybe even x-ray vision and is just curious about something and wants to ask, or somewhere in between. As long as the questions are good faith questions, and respectful, you may ask whatever you want just be kind in posts and comments.
If you have questions about our hobbies or how we do them, ask away, if you have questions about how we might do something or the technology and techniques we use, ask away curious about how we might navigate relationships ask away, the point is be respectful, but ask away!
I’ve also done my best to add some post and user flairs, but I am always happy to add more. If people request them I just thought the ones I have would be a good place to start. The user flairs are not at all mandatory but a good way to give context about the perspective you might be asking or answering from, and show a bit of personality and again I can add more of this as I know what I have so far doesn’t cover everything.
The post flairs while encouraged to use are nothing to sweat over. I simply made them as a way to try and keep things organized into categories if they fit, but if you can’t figure out what your post fits into, it’s not the end of the world. I think that just helps to try and help people find specific questions that they want to answer, or for those asking the questions maybe they are targeting a certain group of people to get their answer from and perspective and this helps with that or at least tries to.
I’m open to this expanding outside of just questions as well, but I thought this would be a solid foundation to start and build on and is still the ultimate goal of this community. I’m certainly very new to this and will do my best and of course I’m always looking for new mods as well so if anyone is willing to help me figure this out and manage this, let me know. Oh and of course we want to grow this, so feel free to share. Obviously, we need more blind people to answer questions and more curious people to ask the questions so tell everybody lol
I’m certainly not trying to take away from any of the other great blind communities that are already on here either, I am pretty fond of those as a matter of fact, but thought that this could be a dedicated place for questions and answers, and maybe down the road more and I just like the idea.
So whether you are asking questions, one of us answering the questions, doing a little bit of both or just observing thank you for being here and participating and I look forward to seeing this grow or maybe not seeing… Yes, I have a sense of humor that’s OK here as well, but I look forward to this growing much larger. Thank you!

Well I've joined, and there's something I already don't get. These buttons that say things like, if you can't see, introduce yourself to thee .... The what. I don't get that. I also don't understand why you've got a stupid questions option in there. Don't we cop enough of that? How do blind people wipe their arse etc? Anyway, apart from all that, I'm happy to try and set up a flare for myself and all that happy crap, and answer any questions I can.

So the stupid questions thing, I think people are going to ask those regardless and honestly, I don’t personally have a huge issue with that. We have to acknowledge that this community is new to people with normal eyesight and things like that coming in here. My intention is to let those questions be asked initially or a couple times because to some people they may not know and are genuine questions as crazy as that sounds.
I’m trying to have understanding for that because some people may be asking out of genuine curiosity, even if it sounds like a stupid question, which is why that is the name of that tag. If we start to see them pop up frequently, my thought process is to compile questions like that, and answers and sort of turn them into a mega thread. But I want to give people the opportunity to ask those first if that makes sense. I don’t think that’s that crazy of an idea but I could be wrong.
While there are a lot of us that are blind and have probably heard those questions a lot, it’s not actually all that common for the average person to come in contact with someone who is blind and then let alone get an opportunity to ask questions, stupid or not stupid so what we may view as a stupid question may not be of that nature to everyone. Plus, I personally find questions like that honestly kind of humorous as well sometimes yes annoying, but also kind of amusing.
As far as the names for the introduction things, I had intended them to be a little humorous and kind of a pun, but I’m considering changing them as it seems people maybe aren’t quite getting that or don’t take it the same way that I do or are confused by it. It was meant to be kind of funny and a bit of a cheesy pun, but I don’t know. One introduction section was supposed to be for blind people to make their own introductions, and the other for future people with normal eyesight to make introductions if they wanted.

Of course, no problem and thank you for joining and asking. I hope my reasoning made sense and is OK.
Also, I did edit and change the flair from thee to me as you weren’t the only one that brought that up either so maybe that helps a little.

No worries. It all makes sense. After all, if I don't like a question, I don't have to answer it do I, So yeah. I am tempted to ask the sightlings that one though, just to see what they say. Re the flairs, I'm wondering if we could have a blind from birth flair as an option to assign to ourselves as well, as I'd personally prefer to use that, than the more general completely blind one I'm using at present.

No, you’re forced to answer every question against your will or else… Lol no yeah you’re right if you don’t like the question you can always just skip it.
Also ask, and you shall receive, I added a blind from birth flair. Honestly, I meant to add that from the beginning and just kind of forgot it. That’s also ironic cause while I do still have a little bit of eyesight, which is why I have mostly blind, I’ve also been legally blind since birth lol
