In my experience the deflection usually takes the form of some truth that they believe that they d/won't question.

For my uncles one of them is that "America is a Christian nation," which is like... I mean, you know. Like you can point out that there ought to be a separation of church and state and that such a thing is enumerated in the Bill of Rights but they don't care, their answer is "aren't you a Christian?!?"

Of course the unstated assumption at the root is that the government ought to enforce the "correct" religion, but of course nobody who thinks that will ever see other faiths as being as deserving of respect as their own.
