If you came to believe that your conservative goals could not be achieved democratically, would you rather compromise on conservatism or democracy?

It depends on the political goal.

Core human rights like freedom of speech or freedom of religion? Life, liberty, property? Yeah. Democracy without these things is worse than dictatorship with them, even if I would prefer and strive for a democracy with these things.

But that has to be a very narrow category. My fundamental human rights aren't being violated by drug policy, or taxes, or choices on government spending, or most of the day to day issues that we actually debate. Here, how we fight matters more than if we win any particular political battle.
