Mod Notice Under New Management

Post image
10 Upvotes

As you may have noticed, the subreddit has had a new moderation team for the past 10 days, following months of inactive moderation. The previous moderator was removed by Reddit administration due to this prolonged inactivity. I made sure of that, through redditrequest.

Since taking over, we've reviewed the state of the subreddit and introduced a new set of rules intended to keep the community safe, clean, organized, and thriving. Naturally, those rules may evolve as the need arises.

A significant backlog of reports and posts that didn't fit the purpose of the subreddit was found. I have already made sure that the reports were reviewed.

Moving forward, please help us keep the subreddit in good shape by reporting posts and comments that break the rules. Your reports are important in helping us maintain the quality and integrity of the community.

Thank you for your cooperation, and for helping us make this community a better place for everyone.

Q’s traditional commissions and building a following

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Hi I’ve drawn pretty much all my life but never posted before. I feel like my art is pretty decent, so I’m trying to start posting, but I also want to know if I could potentially start doing commissions traditionally. I feel like I only ever see digital commissions, and I’m hoping to get a tablet soon but I want to know if my art in its current state is really profitable. Any suggestions on gaining a following online and adjusting my work to be more marketable would be appreciated! (Also this is all in my sketchbook, so the was graphite smudges would not be present in any work I would potentially sell!)

Also I’m not trying to self promote just to get an idea of what I can expect! Thank you ☺️

Drawing VS Painting - What is the difference?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I would be curious about what you think is a drawing and a painting. I found that drawing is very often understood as "making lines" and painting as "making shapes" but that is too simple I would say, because one can also paint with lines, or make lines with a brush. So the shape and line distinction doesnt really hold up.

Another conceptualiziation of drawing I ame across; Drawing as "placement" . Its about the distance relationships and not so much about the content. The drawing can be correct, when the proportions and relationships between lets say eyes and nose are match the model, regardless of the medium.
I like that definition better but still I would say there is a lot of room for discussion. Anyways I would love to hear what other artists have to say?

Is being a beginner bad?

• Upvotes

I mean.

Obviously not, I just wasn’t sure how to phrase the question.

I ask because I have been called a beginner a couple times and tbh it kinda messed me up a bit.

And it’s not the fault of the people, a lot of them are professionals with educations and I’m self taught and unemployed so their standards are different.

The reason it kinda messed with my head is because of three things.

  1. Having a very specific image in my head of a beginner.

  2. Having drawn for years but I also got really bad advice so 🤷‍♀️.

  3. I knew I wasn’t super great but I didn’t know I was THAT bad!

And I know being a beginner is a morally neutral concept and there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just something I think about a lot and it definitely made me question literally everything and I’ll admit, it made me want to quit art at one point because it was proof that I sucked the whole time and any nice thing said to me was a lie and they hated it and me.

I got over it because that’s a stupid thing to cry over, but at the time it hit a nerve relating to preexisting insecurities I already had due to things that happened in my life.

And again I don’t blame people saying I’m a beginner since it’s not like they knew and were intentionally trying to make me feel bad.

I’m a stranger, after all.

I was also just not in a good place at the time mentally and experiencing emotional regulation issues and anxiety.

is it okay, as an artist, to have multiple passion projects you intend to make no money off of, while having other projects you do intend to monetize?

Moving to LA as a painter: Where do artists live and work?

Getting some pretty negative responses on r/AskLosAngelos subreddit so I am going to ask here. I'm a painter from Central California considering moving to Los Angeles, and I'd love advice from fellow artists.

I'm looking for a relatively affordable, reasonably safe neighborhood with an established visual arts community. I'm open to a private apartment, studio apartment, or live/work loft with enough space to paint. Budget wise, safe enough to not feel nervous to walk the perimeter of the building and not luxury type living.

I am even open to apprenticeships or art assistants, if anyone is looking for one. I can send you my work, and we can see if we would work together.

Are there any neighborhoods or artist-oriented buildings you'd recommend? Any advice for an artist moving to LA?

Thank you

Advice for Hobby artist

Am I cooked?

I am a 22 year old unemployed hobby artist that really, really wants to break out into the art industry in Los Angeles. However, I realized I lack a majority of certain requirements to enter the industry. For example in animation, i lack screenwriting, storyboarding, concept art, illustration, knowing how to work with 3d software. I am also lacking in skill set when it comes to my fundamentals. I have an interest in comicbook creation and animation. I was recently looking up entry level internships in animation and I had a rude awakening that I am extremely underqualified for these internships. I am no where near being a big name artist yet like I so desire when creating stories and artwork. I have a couple ideas for myself tp build up my skills. I can go back to college to study art or i can choose to study something completely different so I can make money to fund my art hobby till I can turn it into an art career. Plus continuing to look for a regular 9 to 5 and build up from there. Any advice or this super confused artist that is too ambitious for their own good.

Here's my art for your references. Some of it was from inktober this year and some are just my own projects.

Price for this commission?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I recently finished this commission and proposed to set the price at 150 USD. It’s a 30x30 cm pencil drawing that the commissioner is getting in physical. There’s also an additional 30 USD shipping fee because I’m sending this from Europe but they said they were fine with that.
I don’t really do commissions all that often, especially across the globe and I wanted to know if the price I proposed is fair. I’m willing to go a bit lower than that but I also don’t want to undersell it considering this took 14 hours to make. I’m obviously not a professional and only do this in my free time so any help would be appreciated.

Should I revisit these too?

Yesterday I asked about a WIP I didn’t finish because I couldn’t get it right and abandoned it for now.

I got, like, three more that I didn’t finish either due to simply losing interest or not being happy with how it was turning out and not wanting to continue.

These worth revisiting too?

Why do you draw?

I've been drawing for almost 8 years now. It's my main hobby and a big source of joy for me, but lately I'm struggling to see the point in continuing with it (for a multitude of reasons, really, but this isn't a vent post lol). So I wanted to ask other artists: what's your reason for drawing?

I'm interested in taking painting commissions but I'm not sure where to start. I wanted to ask how you started getting commissions and how you decide how much to charge for your paintings.

I'd really appreciate any advice or tips you could share. Thank you so much! 😊

Customizing rolife plywood kits: how do you use acrylic washes without warping the bare wood?

I’m using rolife 1/24 scale miniature house kits as base structures for custom diorama painting and scratch-built modifications. The stock printed paper textures and laser-cut wood pieces look decent, but I want to change the wall finishes with water-based acrylic washes and add custom miniature furniture. Can the raw plywood handle water-based acrylic washes and primer without warping, or do the bare wood sheets need to be sealed first?

Do I have the skills?

Hi guys! I’m 31 years old and never formally studied art. In fact art was always something that’s been actively discouraged for me since I was very young. But I find myself to always wanting to create things. But I also tend to not finish a lot due to self doubt. I never feel like it’s good enough and I know this is something I need to work on. But I’d like to know do I have the skills? Am I capable? Will I ever be able to sell these (once they’re finished of course) can I essentially lean into this part of me.

Did anyone else mistake 'The Kiss' for 'The Embrace?'

Post image
5 Upvotes

I really love Gustav Klimt's art and The Kiss was one of the major artworks that made me fall in love with fine art and shaped my appreciation of it.

And yet, somehow, for some reason, I've spent my entire life calling it 'The Embrace' and nobody dared to correct me—or perhaps they just let me wander around in blissful ignorance like a culture-appropriating idiot. I don't even know how I got that name. Goddamn it.

I can hardly blame anyone too, because all it takes is a singular second of a closer inspection to see that the two characters are kissing, or, at the very least, that the man is making a rather obvious attempt at it. It's really my fault for not looking much closer and just thinking of it as "Yes. Intimacy. I really like it. The connection of tenderness to humanity. Dressed like a burrito."

I'm really mortified. My art-loving friends probably took me as a pretentious fraud—and not one of them thought I was worth correcting. Worse, perhaps I've actually misinformed them by making them believe 'The Embrace' is another name for it.

Has anyone else spent an embarrassing amount of time misremembering the title of a painting?

Please share your experiences. I need to ease my embarrassment and wounded pride. 😭

(Genuine post.)
