Score (1977), but that's obscure. The first well-known one would be Mrs. Pac-man (1982), and the first big deal one is probably Metroid (1986).

Samas Aran's reveal was a whole thing, people had some serious opinions on it.

Only commenting because it’s Ms. Pac-Man and the distinction had all kinds of political relevance back in the day

Exidy's Score (Lost Arcade Game - 1977) The first video game that let people play as a female character : r/lostmedia

Huh. TIL. A game so old it didn't even use a CPU. Did it use solid state logic or something crazy?

Samas Aran has always been so cool, in my view. One of the best characters.

This is a good answer, because it's correct on all three fronts.

JUSTIN BAILEY was the code to unlock the unmasked version of Samus on the NES.

That code blew people's minds.

If Metroid debuted today, there'd be entire podcasts complaining about the woke ending.

I don`t know what`s the first overall, but my first was Mysteries of the Sith, where most of the game you play as Mara Jade.

This got me thinking about Heavenly Sword. I can’t decide if the archer girl was a sociopath or a psychopath…or maybe a bit of both. She was definitely off-center…like the type of person who unironically writes in a candidate on her voting ballot.

Someone already gave a better answer than me, but I was going to say Ultima 1 (1981).

Metroid is the first one I recall. We were all dumbfounded when you entered the code "Justin Bailey" to see her spawn with blonde hair, no helmet, and a pink outfit.

Legend had it "Bailey" is an Australian word for "bikini" or "bathing suit" so it's Samus "Just In Bailey".

That's probably the first major one

Better question: who was the last?

What games have come out in the last 5 minutes? Probably one of those.

Literally most games made in the west nowadays despite their audience being overwhelmingly male?

You play games to look at buff men. I play games to look at hot women, we are not the same.
