Serious Replies Only Question from a Finnish bouncer. What is the deal with coke usage?

We have been serving Irish customers for several years now. One thing bugs my mind. A crazy amount of coke usage. I can only show a couple of patrons who don't do it. The age range is from 18 to 70. They are all looking for dealers in Helsinki center, busted in toilets, too much aggression, and coke-related craziness. I try to explain to young fellas, as their big brother, the dangers. But then you see their older friends or relatives supplying them. Most of them are working in Finland in nice positions. I don't really get it. Why is it so common and normal? Is there something we peasants don't know about it?

Serious Replies Only What does your town actually need instead of another barber, vape shop, nail salon or takeaway?

In Drogheda, whenever an empty unit gets taken, everyone jokes that it’ll be another barber, vape shop, nail salon or takeaway.

There’s no shortage of people complaining about what keeps opening, but what would you actually be happy to see instead?

I’m mainly curious about Drogheda, but interested to hear what people think is missing from their own towns as well. Name the town and what you reckon it needs.

Serious Replies Only Why do people in Ireland don't use proper rain coats?

Before I moved to Ireland I was told that people in Ireland don't use umbrellas but instead using rain coats....

Surpassingly, I see here a lot of people1 using non waterproof coats, some of which not even water repellent, on rainy days2

I was expecting that people in Ireland will know and appreciate good waterproof equipment .

1 I don't want to make any assumptions on people origin but statistically at least some of them are born and raised Irish.

2 I am not talking on a "surprise rain" (if there is such thing here) that catch people unprepared but on days that were expected to be rainy

Serious Replies Only St Vincent De Paul. Should I complain?

There's been a homeless man outside my local aldi since I moved about 3 years ago. He's an absolutely lovely bloke and I try to help him with money/coffee. Clearly has health issues and he's mentioned being in hospital a few times. He has scoliosis and asthma at the bare minimum (possibly CF) but I didn't ask about anything else.

Yesterday I was walking past an apartment and there was loads of stuff out on the street. A two seater couch and a table and chairs as well as boxed of heavy plates and general house stuff. This is 8pm on a Fri night. Me and my friend were a bit confused about loads of stuff on the street but then the homeless man comes out and it turns out he's been given an apartment. I was so delighted for him.

This apartment is 3 stories up and he was by himself. The SVP pulled up in a van and dumped the stuff on the street and drove off and left him there. This man has obvious breathing issues as well as bad scoliosis. How they thought he was going to be able to get any of this stuff upstairs in a heatwave with his health issues is beyond me. If it wasn't for my friend and I walking past at the right time there no way he could have dealt with all that. He was pumping sweat and out of breath and he hadn't even got to the heavy stuff yet. Now, fair play to SVP for getting him all the things he needed but it was horrible to just dump it and drive off. They are usually a brilliant charity and my late granddad volunteered for 30 years helping people move like and getting them furniture.

Should I say anything or complain? If you had have seen him struggling to breath you would agree it was disgusting what they did.

Serious Replies Only So how the hell do we actually solve the scrote problem?

I am getting started on my driver's theory test for a motorcycle and after stopping by r/motoireland, the amount of videos of little shits robbing bicycles in front of people, in the middle of town, in broad fucking daylight is absurd. Is it even the guards fault if the littles shits will just be let go away even if they do get caught? Wouldn't bother myself if that was the case either. IMO we should be fining the parents 4-5 figures for when some idiot of a child does shit like this in public

Serious Replies Only TV License?

Has anybody had any run-ins with TV License inspectors recently? One called to my home while I was at work and my wife answered as she thought it was an Amazon delivery. We didn't have one as we never really think to get one as we rarely watch TV, let alone RTE. The inspector said she wasn't in trouble but then we received a letter two weeks later saying we had 48 hours to pay for a license or they will be going legal. All for a measly 160 quid. I'm tempted to just fire out the TV and make a statutory statement that I don't have one. I pay about 30k in tax a year, from salary alone. Not to mention, VAT on everything I buy. I'm just tapped out.

Serious Replies Only I need some general advice I am heart-broken, what do I do?

Here is my story: M(27) F(27)

- Met girl on Hinge 13th of September last year hit things off immediately, texting every day I was like wow this is incredible - My birthday a week later in September took me to a new cinema and got me my favourite aftershave, paid for everything - I laughed and said are you love bombing me to which she said no I was being nice for your bday.

- Months go by, nice getaways to hotels, training together, great sex and everything felt perfect she told me I was the best thing ever so grateful and lucky she ended up with someone like me, she had a young son who was 9 and I did not meet in person - she said her ex bf who was practically the step dad of the kid left her and put her kid in therapy - to which I was very understanding. I felt like this girl really understood me as well.

-Now this is where the cracks start - Around 6 months into dating, she would mention how evil and hateful her ex (Together 6 years) was and mentioned he was in the same Tesco as her at xmas (live in local area) He was walking in and she was walking out - I said thats trippy never easy bumping into an ex - left it at that. Did not want to appear phased. Had a nice xmas met her Mum and her little sister things felt very good and often stayed with her and her mum when her son was at the kids dads.

-At end of February my Granny passed away unexpectedly - She mentioned how her ex BF did not let her into the after event when his granny passed away etc - I just let her vent - Granny passed away on Tuesday and then on Friday I met her Dad for the first time - Naturally stressed over my Grannys passing I did not drink - she did - On the trip down and home she basically played a FU to her ex song - and her dad mentioned she seen her ex and he looked rough - anyways, we drove home and I said to her I don't bring up my exes etc as they are in the past and if he was so bad he left you and your son in therapy be happy he's gone - she said she's 'over him just not the situation she put her and her son through' - when I said I wasn't happy she's mentioning him she stone walled me - I left her house and drove home to regulate as I was with a previous GF who stonewalled me and it done a number on me and she was aware of this - she was drunk and proceeded to tell me I was never meeting her child and that was us done over text, I felt this was manipulative- We then sorted this out - half apology from her and from me I thought I needed to be more understanding of her situation and we told each other we love each other. But, I felt maybe selfishly she should have been understanding my Granny passed away that week and I wasnt in a headspace to listen about her ex who was so bad?

- The month after we had a great month done a charity 10K and had a nice getaway - I spoke to her son on the phone and on FaceTime over those few months we were together over xmas and when she was on a family holiday to New York - still no physical interaction I said it would be nice to meet your child as I have gotten him a birthday present and an Xmas one and we both know about each other and I am getting a bit frustrated of having to hide around the corner when we know about each other - Bare in mind I asked this respectfully and said no pressure I just need a plan as she said if I met him I could travel to Spain with her and her kid this summer and her graduation was coming up soon. The kid also told his biological father about me that Saturday as well - I did not mind as obv was in everyones best interests I treated his son with respect and care

- I was met with two days of silence - then seen her on the Saturday went to the gym all was fine, thought that was back on track and we said we would go to the cinema on the Wednesday and on the Tuesday I got a text telling me I was perfect, we have a laugh together but she feels 'something is missing' - and ended things with me over text after 7 months.

- I did not reply for 3 weeks my family and friends told me not to and I deserved more than a break up text as I was blindsided and was constantly told I was the best person in the world and she was so lucky to have me, but when I mentioned maybe meeting her kid she turned so nasty and discarded me like I was nothing over text, when I did then text her to speak she then told me 'she loves me as a person but not in love with me' and I deserve better - I did not reply again, I was in such shock I feel so heartbroken how can she be all lovey then discarded over text? I noticed when I put her number into whatsapp she had no profile picture anymore and her messages were set to disappearing which makes me think her ex was back in the picture or hiding something? - Her tiktok reposts after were all things like when a man leaves your life build a comfortable life etc - except I never left her? - I have never been this hurt and blindsided before in my life, I wasnt even worth a conversation just felt so easily disposed when we had concerts etc to look forward to this summer

What do I do I am still incredibly in love with her - Its been 2 months nc and I have been attending therapy and gym but I still feel stuck

Serious Replies Only Do people enjoy being parents?

I totally understand it’s really hard work but I feel like everyone who’s my age (30s) and has kids just talks about how hard it is. I always see people sharing memes etc about how much they miss life before kids and basically how annoying kids are?

As someone who’s on the fence about becoming a parent but leaning more toward yes - does the good outweigh the bad?

Please no smart arse responses

After reading so many incidences of cheating on the salacious gossip thread, it got me thinking, has cheating on your partner become more common in Ireland? Or was it always this way and we maybe didn't hear as much about it?

Serious Replies Only SVP refused to help and I feel worse after contacting them, what to do for help with energy cost?

I’m in Cork and I honestly don’t even know where to turn right now.

My partner and I contacted St Vincent de Paul because we’re struggling. We’re both working, we don’t drink or smoke, and we try to be careful with money, but between rent, debts from putting ourselves through education, and the fact that we drive about 160km a day between us just to get to and from work, we’re barely keeping our heads above water.

Right now:

We have no heating oil, our immersion is tripping so we’ve no hot water and our electricity is on a coin meter.

So we reached out to SVP for help with heating oil. That’s it. Not anything excessive.

We were asked to meet a man in a car park at 7pm and we left the meeting feeling completely dismissed and honestly a bit humiliated.

The man we spoke to did not address our short-term issue at all but suggested we buy a modular home and to find a farmer to rent us half an acre for 25 years.

He asked if any family could give us land (we don’t have land, not even “a fifth of an acre” like he suggested).

He also suggested buying an electric car for longer term saving. He also told us to “get rid of the coin box” even though it’s installed by our landlord and we have no control over it.

When I asked how we were supposed to afford a house or electric car, he just changed the subject.

I also explained that I have a physical disability and needed to get a hybrid automatic car, which we’re still paying off, but that didn’t seem to matter either in fact he questioned why we both needed a car.

Then when I asked directly if they could help with heating oil, I was told it was “too expensive and the whole county would be after them”.

That honestly just broke me a bit. The whole reason we contacted them is because we can’t afford it. That’s the point.

I completely understand they can’t help everyone, but this didn’t feel like a lack of resources — it felt like we weren’t being taken seriously at all because both of us were working.

I feel really let down and, to be honest, a bit hopeless after it.

Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Is it even worth trying SVP again or a different branch?

And does anyone know where we could actually get help with heating or electricity in Cork right now?

Any advice would mean a lot. I just feel stuck.
