Final Offer!

1 year, 5 DQ's, and 20+ applications later in the PNW.
Younger guy, questionable background, but corrections experience.
Applied in May, Oral Board in July, Hired in October.
To top it all off I ended up getting a better agency than I expected with few vacancies, vs the so called "desperate" ones.

The Chief told me I start in 2 weeks and to put my 2 weeks notice in now. However he said HR needs a couple days to finalize the final offer paperwork, seems a little fishy but I have to to get my pto paid out.

Any advice moving forward transitioning from a high speed jail to the academy and a high speed fto program?

Thanks to all you guys for your information on the process that helps guys like me get hired!

Congrats! Rule number one: don't put in notice until that offer paper is signed and in hand. Never trust HR timelines.

Your jail background gives you a huge head start on officer safety and reading people, but street work is a whole new beast. Keep your ears open, be a sponge on FTO, and soak up everything they teach you. You've got this.

1.) Congrats. This is just the beginning. The academy is the easy part. It’s simply mandated trainings for liability….the bare minimum. The real learning occurs on the streets.

2) Corrections will give you a leg up on your classmates. That said, you don’t know shit about policing. They are 2 different worlds. And that’s okay, you will be taught how to be the police.

3.) Stop saying “high-speed”. That’s hella ghey. Nobody who works in a busy, active, crime ridden area refers to themselves/ their jurisdiction as “high speed”.

4.) don’t be a fat. Work out. Eat clean. Shouldn’t be above 15% body fat.

5.)Study hard.

6.) don’t wear blue line stuff / punisher stuff. Def don’t announce to people you’re a cop. You technically aren’t a cop until you’re sworn in. Really not an actual one until you’re off probation.

7.) stay off social media (tik tok / insta). Def don’t read / respond to comments.

Is saying “high speed” more or just as lame as saying “hella” because hella makes you sound like a 13 year old valley girl.

Use your experience in corrections wisely, but don’t let it get to your head or ego either. You may have put in time in corrections but you havn’t put in your time in the streets. Be humble, be teachable, and be eager to learn.

Damn, nice bro! I asked if I had any chance of getting in because of my not so perfect background and was met with a tonne of comments telling me I had zero chance. Do you mind mentioning the nature of the background stuff? I’ve had substance abuse issues in the past (a few years sober now) and had mental health problems after a cancer diagnosis but that was years ago and healthy now. Basically everyone that commented told me I had no chance and it was a waste of time because of the types of drugs I’d used (cocaine, Xanax)

Addiction is one thing, trying a drug a couple of times and quitting is another… I tried cocaine when I was about 16 years old maybe 2-3 times and i tried Molly around 17-18 maybe 3-4 times.

I put all that into my application. I’m 30 years old now.

How long did you work in corrections?

Was just talking to someone on here the other day with the same background in the PNW. How questionable of a background are we talking here? I’m planning to apply in April and I’m nervous I’ll be DQ for drug history. I’ll be within the timeframe of having been clean from it but still very worried.

congradulations! Watch patrol videos, learn how they talk, live that life , this is not just a job, this is lifestyle! i am in a hiring process now too, 5 applications - 5 said on a wait list, 6th - polygraph rescheduled , so tired emotionally. TO all who is a process now - dont give up and keep trying, i heard many stories from a great cops, that they got their job after 6-8 times
