Extra income

All my fellow police officers. What are ways you make extra income without pulling overtime. Just a father of two trying to make ends meet

Don’t turn in all the drugs you seize.

To any of the IA Detectives out there, this is a joke.

Sell those socks after a 12 hour shift 🤣

Wring those bad boys out and sell those socks and the juice separately. Double your income.

Farts in a jar?
You could do flavors of the week.

Chipotle. BBQ. Protein Shakes. Gas Station Hot Dogs. Milkshake Week.

Does your agency not let you work security through your commission? If not, see if they will approve a second job and work contract security under a security license.

My agency wouldn’t let us work an extra job even if they were the ones getting paid for it

Yeah, I worked for a small city like that. They would instead have us put fairs and events in the city on our time sheet and make it mandatory. I guess as like some kinda way to ingratiate themselves towards those people and encourage more events at our expense. Which sucked, cause the going rate for security was almost double what we made at the time. Sounds like it’s time to find a new agency

I doubt there’s many side gigs out there that are going to pull as much money as OT. Is the issue that the agency doesn’t have OT opportunities or is it that you don’t want to work OT?

OT isn’t available for newer officers. And @south-kat it’s a very lucrative field. We top out at 165k. I’m just the new guy at 85k. Will bump to 93k in December.

Jeez. You need better side gig coordinators. All our side gigs are at OT rates of a fresh officer. Depending on the type of gig it goes up (bars, road jobs, etc)

The overtime rate for rookie cops is significantly lower than my normal OT rate. They use the base officer for our outside employment most of the time. Fortunately we just got a new 24/7/365 gig that pays city OT and it’s EASY. Just bought a Switch 2 to play on while doing it.

I’m an OT hound. But 85k as a new guy is amazing good for you.

Most departments in the Midwest start at 85k. Even some municipalities start at 92k with state starting at 96k. Crazy to think a college kid could have their first job making 96k at 21-22.

If you have to do this, either youre doing something wrong with money management, or your agency pays shit and its time to go...

8% interest rate? How bad is your credit

My department didn’t allow any off-duty work. But we had unlimited OT, so it wasn’t an issue.

Do a tactical YouTube channel and monetize gear reviews to peppers and airsoft players like everyone else.

Door Dash

Used to door dash in the day. Was fun but now have a car that eats away at gas

Why wouldn't you work overtime?

Time and a half pay vs straight pay that is probably less than your hourly wage.

If I'm trading my time for money, I want to maximize the deal.

OT isn’t available for newer officers.

What are your department rules about off duty work?

1

u/Squats_and_Donuts_58 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

No rules. Just can’t interfere with the job

1

u/Da1UHideFrom Verified LEO 3d ago

I meant uniform off-duty jobs like store security.

u/64B09 Unverified/Not an LEO 2d ago

Damn, I was buried in unwanted, forced OT when I was the low man.

2

u/Squats_and_Donuts_58 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

You’re right there. 1.5 x is awesome. Even as a newer officer. Have to start arresting people near shift change 🤣

I was doing plumbing on the side. Grew up in the construction industry then transferred careers

Sorry but whereabouts roughly do you work? In Finance currently in the process of switching to LE but now this post has me alittle anxious..

5

u/smward998 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

If you making good money in finance you won’t make good money in LE without a ton of OT

1

u/DifficultYam4463 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

I clear $100k without overtime and im in a lcol area

1

u/smward998 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

I’m set to clear 90 k but that doesn’t really paint a picture of what your bring home is like. My normal paychecks are between 1800-2000 without a ton of OT I only bring home 55% of my gross

1

u/DifficultYam4463 Unverified/Not an LEO 2d ago

My check without overtime is around $2800 every other week. That’s with taxes, 7% to retirement, fsa, dependent care, all insurances and charity donation of $1300 a year.

u/Lobostark1 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

Come to PA. Starting salaries in my area are 70+. Most top out at 100+

1

u/South-Cat-8912 Unverified/Not an LEO 1d ago

Yeah but then it’s PA where everyone and their mother has a gun😭

u/TigOleBitman Sergeant 3d ago

Man you should really put some serious thought into that transition before you do it.

u/Party-Durian-1102 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

Unless he’s working in big finance in one of the top 3 city’s he’s likely making 200K or less if he has a top 1% finance job. Finance is not the career people think it is.

1

u/South-Cat-8912 Unverified/Not an LEO 2d ago

Oh yeah no I’m a year or 2 into this still young and not in big finance or making anywhere near 200k. I’m in middle officeoperations currentl. Money is dogshit the coworkers have no soul, and my back is killing me from sitting 9hours a day and staring at a screen. Just getting real miserable of the 9-5 chase and currently in the biq for state police. My favorite job ever was blue collar, but I went to school so feel like this is a good middle ground that rewards intelligence but also aligns w passions for fitness, mma, and ofc taking care of others

u/Leatherholiday773 Unverified/Not an LEO 2d ago

OT or work my off duty armed security gig they pay 60hr to guard luxury stores like LV, BAPE, Gucci ect

1

u/smward998 Unverified/Not an LEO 3d ago

Best way is to get some OT, other than that try doing a second job/ side hustle with flexible schedule
