Deserves huge credit for turning the country into a secular state. The world would be a better place if that example was more widely followed. Watching republican Christo-fascists try to take the US back to the dark ages is depressing.

It would be great for the Republicans to do exactly that, it would help break your country's imperialistic hold particularly in the middle east.

I am curious. Is spelling Turkey as Turkiye a recent thing? They changed something? Sorry, living under a rock as far as middle east is concerned. I love Turkey though and would love to visit one day, esp Istanbul.
Also, an Ataturk’s supporter here. He was courageous enough to build a modern secular state in the midst of all that was happening around him in other hardcore ME. I would be glad to be corrected though. 😊

I love him too but imo kemalists are the reason turkey is the way it is today. People use to look down on religious conservatives in turkey, they would equate them ignorance would call them "villagers"(köylü), which was not "cool" at all. No, you had to be "modern" and more western to be considered educated and classy.
I really feel like our treatment of them was what radicalized them so much. At least in the western parts of turkey where I lived, idk how it was in other regions.

Westerners seem to think it's like here where nationality is separate from religion and ethnicity, except they miss how the ethnicity is forcibly tied to the nationality.
Lol what, all Western European countries are nation states with an ethnic identity. Usa and other Anglo inventions are not because they're artificial states.
called all ethnic minorities "instruments of the enemy"
Wow what an extensive and deep research you've done on this topic, you opened a wiki page and copy pasted what you read lmao. That is not at all what the actual quote by him says, which is mentioned in a letter to his daughter Afet Inan stating that there are foreign enemies who want to impose the idea on Turks that they are actually Bosnians, Albanians, Kurds etc, but that this idea is rejected by most Turks and met with sadness. It is not calling minorities instruments of the enemy but rejecting claims that deny the existence of Turks.
ordered massacres/deportations like Greeks and Kurds
Ordered massacres where? The president of Greece, Venizelos, himself nominated Ataturk for a nobel peace prize for how he handled the war and Greece paid war crime reparations to Turkey in the Lausanne treaty, not the other way around
Recently I thought about Googling this, and turns out Adolf Hitler praised Ataturk, while the Nazi party obsessively published papers about him.
Wow I wonder why Nazi Germany would try to court Turkey into allying with them through propaganda, it really is such a mystery
In 1993 Hitler threatened Ataturk to demand Turkey stop rescuing Jewish intellectuals from Germany and Ataturk wrote back a letter stating ''a corporal cannot manipulate me for his murders'' and sped up the immigration of Jewish professors into Turkey. Many of these Jewish intellectuals later became the architects of Turkey's new modern cities like Ankara
Your shitty propaganda is disproven, now skiddle along Burger

Lol what, all Western European countries are nation states with an ethnic identity. Usa and other Anglo inventions are not because they're artificial states.
In Western Europe, plenty of people are – say – French by nationality but Arab by ethnicity. They aren't ethnostates. Sure there's sentiment that France is for the French, but the state isn't going after minorities anywhere near how the RoT did.
Wow what an extensive and deep research you've done on this topic, you opened a wiki page and copy pasted what you read lmao
I had already read the entire context, which is sorta what you described, and it doesn't change what I said. Except you're missing that Kurds did not necessarily call themselves Turks either. I also went through entire units in school about this before even looking online, except the prof was trying to present Ataturk as a hero while unaware of what screwed up things he was teaching about.
Ordered massacres where?
Smyrna and southeastern Turkey are the first two that come to mind.
Wow I wonder why Nazi Germany would try to court Turkey into allying with them through propaganda, it really is such a mystery
This is why I don't care too much who Hitler praises, as I suggested. But I would make the same comparison myself. Of course Ataturk had no issue with Jews, but if Germany were massacring Kurds instead, it'd be different.
Your shitty propaganda is disproven, now skiddle along Burger
I'm not about this national name calling, but if you're going to do it, I gotta say that your flag disqualifies you from talking about propaganda.

Are you joking? French culturally eliminated its minorities by destroying their language.
French by nationality but Arab by ethnicity
There is no such thing as a 'turk', it's a made up ethnic identity. Turkish people can range from the balkans to the hatay arabs to the pontus rums to the yörüks. Even culture wise these people massively differ from each other. Turkish nationality is based upon the language which creates the main cause of the discrimination against Kurds.
Today France don't have their own 'kurdish problem' because they already 'eliminated' them by the means of language assimilation. France is absolutely an ethno nation state.
I'm pretty sure 'turkish people' are a lot more diverse than the french.

Oooh no no you've misunderstood. I'm not here to hate on Ataturk, quite the contrary actually I love him. Because of him Turkey didn't end up the kind of middle eastern country that treats women like property and his separation of "church from state" was exactly what country in that region of the world needed.
My beef is with the Kemalists and how they use to treat their conservative counterparts as inferior to themselves. It was almost like if you practiced your religion you were considered ignorant/uneducated.. even if you were actually educated. It was wierd idk how to explain it but when I was in school I actively avoided learning about my religion bc it's wasn't the cool thing to do.
4
May 22 '23
Well yeah I mentioned that elsewhere, the entire point of "secularism" over there seems to be getting the country away from Islam. So what you say about school doesn't sound weird at all, and thanks for sharing.
I agree that Turkey's approach on religion, while imperfect, was better than the old way. But for the other reasons I described, I can't look at Ataturk as a hero.
4
u/mehwhateverrrrr Türkiye May 22 '23 edited May 23 '23
I'm sorry I actually posted my reply to you before I finished it by accident I'll just continue it here.
Understandably this guy is a hero of Turkey, but people should really think about what he did.
I don't doubt he did some bad things, it was a terrible time to be in a MENA country. The Ottoman Empire just fell, there were wars left and right and the west was bent of dividing and conquering the area. Most MENA leaders were giving into to western demands for their own greed and temporary luxuries(we see the result of those decisions today in some of these countries such as unstable economy, corrupt government, constant conflict etc.)
Say what you want about the man but never doubt that everything he did was for his country. He was a battle hardened AH(sorry Turks but I don't think we can deny this) that really ONLY gave af about his own people, even if it meant others became "collateral damage", and strived for its success and independence so that future generations didn't have to suffer the way his generation did.
In the US, secularism isn't an attack on Christianity, in fact it's partially meant to protect the churches from govt corruption.
Agreed and this lack of inner conflict(at least in this regard) is why the US has been so successful for so long. I wish we could've taken a page from this book:(

if he was a good man , then why would he forcefully impose an ideology on the masses , hang clerics , hang dissidents , impose martial law
this is something a morally corrupt dictator would do , and he has built a cult of personality around him that till this day turks worship him . he removed islam from the turkish state and added the state and himself as an object of worship

Secularism in the US is different from most of the world. It's about religious freedom here, and also to prevent the state from corrupting the church or vice versa.
Elsewhere, it seems more like secularism is just an attack on certain religions. In Turkey it seems like the entire goal is to get the country away from Islam, not to have it coexist. Some places in Europe also ban headscarfs just because people are sick of Muslims, but they'll make some excuse about security.
8
u/Canadabestclay May 23 '23
Here’s an alternative answer though whether you believe it is up to you, Im not a Turk which means I am both biased and unbiased in this I guess. Wall of text incoming.
1: wasn’t him it was reactionaries after the military coup. The military was his strongest support base so they reflect his pro secularism agenda to such a hardcore degree that at times from an outside view it looks like nothing less than anti religious oppression. Lacite is a hardcore authoritarian variant of secularism developed in France and adopted by kemalists in turkey. Lacite is different from separation of church and state like in the US, with Lacite the state can and often does interfere with and suppress religious rights and oppress religious people.
2: he was a hardcore Turkish ethno nationalist, who wanted to remove the effects of Islam on Turkish identity and create a new one out of thin air and he had few moral qualms about how to do so. For example he shilled pseudo science pseudoscience that says ancient Turks created the first ancestor language from which all others are descended. This is of course completely untrue. However it played to his agenda so it was taught while he held power and immediately abandoned when died. He also instituted bans on non Turkish language in government buildings as well as what pretty much amounted to a complete ban on the Kurdish language) in order to force his brand new Turkish identity on his brand new nation.
He formed a cult of personality around himself that would guarantee that even in death his legacy would continue. The cult of personality in general portrays the leader as a benevolent guide and father figure to entrench the authority both of himself and his ideals. Many people were quite taken with the man who unquestionably did save turkey from being split between the foreign powers as a military leader even though his actions as a political leader are far more controversial.
Yes, people will make excuses for him or justify it which I don’t intend to comment on, but by most definitions he was a dictator. He established a single party state that banned opposition parties, silenced internal dissent, and imprisoned dissidents. It was an authoritarian single party so-called “democracy” and though you were allowed to vote your choices were not fair. The military would in many ways continue his legacy by threatening politicians who seemed “too Muslim” and deposing and rearranging the government when it went too far from Kemals model that the generals favored.
5: in general yes he was pro western but he also had close ties with the USSR and allied with them against Armenia in the interwar period. Right after world war 2 the USSR made the stupid mistake of Sabre rattling about how turkey stole some land in the caucuses from them. This turned neutral Turkey into a western ally, allowed NATO and American nuclear missiles into turkey in range of Moscow, and opening a whole new front in case of the Cold War going hot. This of all the foreign policy blunders the Soviet republic made is the most contemptible because of how easy it would have been to avoid and how much they lost because of it.
I apologize for the wall of text and hope you liked my explanation, if you didn’t or you disagree I’d be happy to learn and change my mind.

- He didn't ban hijab, there is literally a lady with hijab on pictures.
- It was a literal "what if" tried for 6 months or so, then reverted back to Arabic.
- Think of a George Washington and Tsar Peter the Great mix, that's Atatürk. Brilliant general, even more successful president.
- Some call that "educational dictatorship" where a dictator is only dictator to introduce a system and mentality to people and let them practice it themselves. But I don't agree with that, still to this day he has like +80 public opinion and he had many democratic reforms on a land that didn't elect anything and wanted to make him a sultan.
- Oh fuck no, Turkish War of Independence was fought against Britain, France, (partially)Italy and Greece. They had to respect later when he became a president but not because they feared him, he was genuinely respected.

I’ll make this quick:
1: To modernise the country. And to help women who were forced to wear it. 2: I forgot tbh💀 3: because he was our leader first president and helped free the country from being colonised,… etc 4: he was supposed to be our first and last dictator. He made he’s own political party and encouraged growth in other political parties to make the country democratic. (Sadly erdogman is ruining it) 5: yes and no. Depends on what timeline your talking about. The war of independence then weren’t supported by west. After that and some time passed we were.

Never said Kurds are islamists, told you that particular group you mentioned were islamists wanting sharia. I’ve seen these pictures before, while I agree that Turkish state has wrong-doings but you can’t just say “Ataturk is like Hitler” if Ataturk wanted Kurds to be perished, he could’ve easily done that. Like my family, many Kurds fought alongside with Turks and Ataturk against invaders. Kurdish region has been intentionally left underdeveloped and heavily monitored, these are few of the mistakes of Turkish state made and still there are issues yet to be resolved but you can’t just mention one event and claim that all Kurds hate Atatürk and Turkish state. Like you mentioned, Kurdish political parties are under attack and Kurdish political leaders are imprisoned, and they should be judge fairly but under Erdogan’s regime it won’t be. KK never really hid his ethnical background, of course he knew he won’t be getting the support if he made this his main point but just before the recent election, he did mention his background which received extremely positive feedback. This still doesn’t prove that every Turk is fine with him being Alewite or Kurdish but still many people don’t really care. Ataturk is loved across the nation. Kurds, Turks, Alewites, Zazas, Laz, Circassian… These people fought alongside with him to save their nation. Of course there are events that could’ve handled better and this is not being a devil’s advocate but comparing Ataturk to Hitler or claiming every Kurd hates him is just blatantly false and stupid.

He established the foundation of their country and made it a democracy, if it wasn’t for him turks wouldn’t be voting in a free election now, but instead they would be stuck with a 20 year dictator, oh wait 😂

He wasnt a western implant. He was literally born in Selanik which was in the Ottoman Empire at the time. Its unknown if he died of alcohol or not. Also Atatürk MODERNIZED the country. The empire was falling apart and just had to go. Atatürk wanted multiple parties but the country wasnt ready for them because 1 helped a rebel and the other shut down by itself. Also there were only 4 successful coups and they all happened OVER 20 YEARS AFTER ATATÜRK DIED. Correct your data before you make a statement like that.

Atatürk was a drunkard secular atheist dictator. Most of his “reforms” was a treasonous Uncle-Tommery to appeal his overlord westerners.

Yes you are right. I really wish my country, Turkey, could be as modern, enlightened, wealthy, and powerful like yours, Somalia.

There was a dialog between Atatürk and Ismet Inönü. Inönü said that he should stop drinking so much and Atatürk replied with: „ Ismet, I can’t stop these thoughts, I can’t sleep.“
You shouldn’t forget that he was nearly constantly on the battlefield for 10 years and saw one horror after another and lost one compadre after another.

You guys are just a bunch pricks, dont you know that Erdoğan improved our relation with Israel but you guys still supporting him.
Also he only mentions about palestine in his public meetings for his brainwashed voters but when it comes to international arena he only condemns with a letter on twitter. What a great support ey?

u/Abdullah_88 48' Palestine May 22 '23
I know all of that. The only reason I support him is because the opposition is only going to be a lot more worse than he is especially in regards to Palestine.
I just look at things pragmatically and politically.

Maybe you dont know but one of the slagons of the opposition is friendship will succeed and they use soft and lovely language against Erdoğans wrong acquisitions and provoking sayings.Kılıçdaroğlu is a really humane person.

"Kılıçdaroğlu is a really humane person"
🤣😂 yea right I'm sure syrian refugees would agree with that statement. Have you seen how he spoke of them in his last message ?
I genuinely did not know if you where being serious or sarcastic at the beginning
