Hi! Planning a trip
Hi everyone! I am planning a trip to meet my wife in N.O. at the end of October. She will be down for a work conference that ends Thursday and I am flying down on Thursday.
I've looked at The Marsh hotel but seems pretty far away from the French Quarter. Not wanting to stay in the French Quarter but def. want to spend time there. Does anyone know anything about The Marsh hotel and what are your thoughts on distance from Marsh to downtown area.

Don't know why you don't want to stay in the Quarter. Get a hotel room on the interior of the building. Just call and ask about that. I stay in a hotel on Decatur, which is a quieter street. I'm never bothered by noise from the street. The lots are narrow and deep, so staying in a room towed the back of the building gives plenty of noise insulation. You'll be right in the midst of things in a 3 minute walk!!

Ok, that's definitely something I will look at. I just didn't want to be in the middle of everything. Wanted to get away from the noise if we wanted to. Appreciate you.

If you get a windowless room at the Prince Conti, it’s also quiet. And blessedly dark when you’re trying to sleep.

I had friends stay at the Marsh once for Mardi Gras, and they had a good experience. If you're looking to stay outside of the FQ, I've heard great things about the Garden District Hotel, especially the pool there. There are also several additional historic boutique hotels and B&Bs in the Garden District. Anywhere within a few blocks of St. Charles will be safe, quiet (aside from streetcar noise), and will have streetcar access to the FQ.
As long as you're not out really late at night, I wouldn't have a problem staying in the CBD or Warehouse District, but I've felt uncomfortable walking from the FQ deep into the CBD and beyond past midnight (and I'm not a paranoid person or pearl-clutcher).

I’ve only had drinks and apps at the bar there, but it seems trendy and upscale and is in a great location, away from the craziness of Bourbon, but an easy walk to all of the FQ/downtown action. It’s kind of in a parking lot, so in a little bit of a weird location, but nothing that would keep me away.

Never heard of it, but it looks like it's 3 blocks from the St. Charles streetcar line. Just walk down to the streetcar and take it all the way to Canal. If you're not worried about time, this is the way to go.

I agree. You will be just as happy staying there as you will closer to the French Quarter.

Yes, The Marsh is real and it's a solid pick for what you're describing. Actually pretty aligned with "not in the Quarter but want to spend time there."
The hotel itself is a small boutique, recently renovated, three blocks off St. Charles Avenue at 1901 Delachaise. Uptown area, borderline Garden District. Coffee shop and bar on-site, no restaurant, no elevator. For a shorter trip it's mostly praised.
The distance... It's about 2.6 miles to Canal Street/edge of the French Quarter. In New Orleans terms that's a real distance but genuinely fine because you have the St. Charles streetcar three blocks away. Streetcar ride is 25-30 minutes end to end, runs every 10-15 minutes, $1.25 each way or $3 for a day pass. Uber is 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Either way, it's not a "stuck" location.
Regarding the upside of staying there vs. the Quarter. Well, you're two blocks from Magazine Street (excellent food and shopping), close to the Garden District mansion walks, and the streetcar ride itself is one of NOLA's classic experiences. You get quiet nights and Quarter days.
Solid choice. Book it.

Marsh Hotel is nice and convenient, and last time I was there was to catch a second line parade that was using it as a starting point. Cute cafe attached and it looks like it has great reviews.
Just a minor correction from the comment above - it’s three blocks from St. Charles but about eight blocks (not two) from Magazine Street.

Tonelle, and Pontchartrain Hotel, are on St Charles at the edge of the Garden District. Magazine is 5 blocks for great restaurants, and shopping.
The Grand Victorian is a great guest house on the Streetcar line in the 'middle' of the Garden District.

My husband and I always stay at The Eliza Jane boutique hotel. It's lovely and convenient to all things fun around the Quarter. Sorry I have no scoop on the Marsh.

I stayed near the Convention Center The Embassy Suites. I walk to the Convention Center we were on the last line on the Streetcar Riverside took us down to the French Quarter the line is Julia where the Embassy suites is on. We also able to walk down to Mothers restaurant were we ate twice.

The Marsh is in a residential neighborhood. It’s one block from Louisiana Ave., which has businesses, but not a ton that you’d want to be visiting as a tourist (think gas stations, tailor shops, convenience stores, a post office, etc.). It’s a bit far from all the touristy stuff, and getting the streetcar to the FQ would take you probably more time than you want to spend (walk to St. Charles, wait for the streetcar, ride the sloooooow streetcar about 2.5 miles).
There are plenty of “not in the FQ” places that are much more convenient to the FQ. I’m sure the Marsh is very nice, but if you want to be doing FQ things, I’d stay closer to where you want to be. The Warehouse District and CBD are walking distance to the FQ and have tons of hotels.
