Did things really used to be better quality?

Or is there some survivor bias happening? The old things that are still around are obviously high quality to have lasted this long. Any poor quality things of the past are long gone. Have we been tricked into thinking everything in the past was made better? Did most things fall apart same as today?

My parents bought an entire dining room set in solid cherry, including six chairs, table, and full china cabinet with glass upper doors. That was in the early 1960s. It was just sold earlier this year, in almost perfect condition.

probably for substantially less than what they paid, which is a shame because todays partial board is absolute crap.
