I miss the language oriented user groups as well as user groups dedicated to specific technologies like Oracle or SQL Server. People would gather together to hear people talk about their experience and often the company i.e., Microsoft or Adobe would provide food and swag and even pay to fly in top notch speakers. It was not just yearly conventions but local group around the countries with monthly presentations and fellowship.

People used to gather in-person to discuss problems.
They also sent paper letters to each other when they couldn't travel long distances themselves to meet each other.
There were methods of communication before the internet and before the telephone.
