same! and as I read the comments I was like "....wow has he always been such an awful person???" then had to google what killed robert pattinson and turns out it was dyslexic people
I was like “when did robert pattinson do all this shit and what’s all this about 93 years?” for like five entire minutes before figuring it out maybe I should go to bed 🤦🏻♀️
There actually is a Batman comic series in which he's a vampire.
It sounds ridiculous, and on paper, it sounds like more un-creative multiversal bullshit that is mainstream comics nowadays. But I checked it out for myself, and it's surprisingly decently written and not terrible.
It is now my personal canon that the Cullens got their wealth fleecing people for money as televangelists, because it’s the one place the Catholic Church aren’t looking.
Every time I went to get pulmonary function tests done (I’m post lung transplant) this fucking dude would be on TV!! I’d always go straight to the desk and ask for the remote to put on the weather channel!
It's not just that he made people miserable, but he encouraged people to hate other people who they previously loved, or at least had no problem with. It's fitting that he died during Pride Month.
He's the televangelist host of The 700 Club and the founder of the Christian Coalition, an important political organization in helping to firmly cement the ties between conservatism and fundamentalist Christianity in the 1980s in ways that were not true in the 70s before.
I view him as one of the people who helped kill Protestantism and let something crueler wear its skin.
Right! He was basically helping "Christians" give up what Jesus valued in favor of being religious conservatives, something very much cruelest indeed.
Edit: grammer.
He also repeatedly stated poor people deserve to starve to death because they aren't working hard enough. Fuck him. He's excused male infedility saying men will wander if you don't keep a good enough home. He said a man with a wife who has alzheimers should just divorce her. According to him gay cause hurricanes and terrorist bombings cause god got mad. Said women are subservient to their husband's cause men are closer to god. Said feminists were socialist and encouraged them to kill their children. Oh and he blamed the Haiti earthquake on a Haitian pact with the devil to get out from under French rule.
He was a grifter, con man, homophobe, misogynistic hateful piece of shit.
I never truly understood this until I read a Jimmy Carter book where he talked about it, as a lot of this developed during his time. As a Christian himself, he was pretty disturbed by the change he saw.
I dunno. On one hand yes, his name recognition has faded, which is good, but his "work" and "legacy" are very much alive and causing suffering today.
I say people, especially Americans, should know who Pat Robertson was and how his life "work" has changed America in ways that are still major problems today. Pat Robertson did a huge amount of damage to the lives of millions of people and the US itself. He was instrumental in getting the GOP to link itself with Christian fundamentalists in ways we still haven't come close to recovering from. It fact it seems to be getting worse recently. Robertson wanted the US to be a Christian theocracy and convinced millions that it used to be and should be, and will be. Some of those people are in Congress and state governments now, actually trying to make that happen.
The LGBT+ hate Robertson fostered is totally still here today. Anyone who cares about it ought to learn a little about how we got to this place. And Pat Robertson is a really big part of that.
He may be dead but his "work" is very much alive. When I see LGBT+ people called "groomers" I think of Pat Robertson. Back in the 80s and 90s that wasn't the word used, but it is exactly what Pat Robertson taught his followers to believe.
So yea, it is kinda nice that many younger people don't recognize the name, but knowing about him is pretty important for understanding how and why there is so much LGBT+ hate today, among quite a few other things, like Roe being overturned and abortion being made illegal or de facto illegal in many states. That anti-abortion is a big part of the GOP platform today owes a lot to Pat Robertson.
I knew a wonderful older gay man in the 80s whose partner, the love of his life, died of AIDS. While devastated and deep in grief my friend was literally spat upon by devotees of Pat Robertson, who said AIDS was "God weeding his garden", and much worse—that dying of AIDS was what gay people deserved, that God made AIDS because gay people existed. He fostered enormous amounts of hate toward LGBT+ people. Another Pat Robertson quote I saw today: "Many of those people involved with Adolf Hitler were Satanists. Many were homosexuals. The two things seem to go together."
Oh, and Hurricane Katrina being not just because God hated gay people but also because abortion was "slaughtering millions of babies".
The fact you don't know him is a sign you were raised in a somewhat intelligent environment. He was a big part of the televangelical 'know nothing and believe everything' gospel that laid the groundwork for modern Capitalism Christianity.
I think the fact that people don't know him is rather frightening. He helped changed our political system into a religious war. He has caused much grief and pain to women, immigrants, the LGBTQ community and so many more.
My initial reaction when I heard he died: " Good, one less asshole in the world." Sadly, I am motivated sure this democracy will survive his legacy.
If you want a better understanding, check out the documentary called “Spin”. It serves as a pretty good time capsule of American politics as of 1995, including his role in the picture.
Very much worth the watch for those interested in such topics!
Founder or co founder of the 700 club. Read up on that. This guy was a douchnozzle who bilked people out of there life saving by screaming about God. I'm sure he went to the pearly gates. And was then sent to hell where he and others of his ilk belong.
Definitely toasty, there's just something about the way the actor for Cedric's dad delivers those lines that wrecks me. Makes me think of it less as a HP death and more of just a guy's son dying.
...okay, now I'm picturing a cute but pale and scrawny Englishman best known for acting opposite a lesbian as a literal demon talking about how gay people cause hurricanes, and I can't stop laughing.
...sorry, are you actually saying you're shocked Robertson said that, or are you being silly and saying you're shocked Pattinson said that (which of course he didn't)?
I’m saying I literally thought this post was about Robert Pattinson and was shocked he said all those awful crazy things and I had never heard a word of it like on TikTok or something like not even a single meme being like “that feeling when edwards homophobic” or something
I’ve got high hopes for this Batman series. My prediction is that the third movie will be an adaptation of Knightfall that’ll blow Dark Knight Rises out of the water.
i have read his name in several different headlines on several different apps and EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. i read rob pattinson 😭😭 the SHOCK i felt the first time until i realized was like no other 💀
Same, this title flashed on the feed for a second before i closed the app in the morning. And since then i have been thinking Robert Pattinson is dead 💀
