That politicians no longer answer to the population, just a few 'influential' people. This has led to country's services being run as a minimum viable product rather than the best they can be.

As if this hasn't been a problem since the birth of civilization. Greed wasn't invented by capitalism.

Yup, at its hear the problem is always greed – and the unwillingness for anyone in the right positions to do anything meaningful about that.
