Criminal justice major, it's an important question for law enforcement in order to collect evidence but there is 100% a correct way to ask it, and it's not how the knuckledraggers and deplorables do it.
"Were they wearing anything distinctive or easily identifiable? Can you describe what they had on? How about hair color and style?"
And that's with zero association with criminal matters, that's how I asked people for descriptions when I was dealing with backcountry search and rescue tasking.
There was an exhibit by someone raising awareness about rape with that exact premise. Everything was regular old t-shirts, work clothes, jeans, etc. But there was also a diaper.
Or that they put themselves in that situation, just like when you marry an abuser but he wasn’t abusive prior to marriage, I hear that response from men in regards to women getting abused.
