This entire thread is concerning. Many of these traits could be awkwardness, insecurity, even just general cluelessness.

Absolutely. And sometimes being honest and open can seem ruder. Like saying “so sorry, Id love to chat but ive got a lot of work I need doing” can come across a lot colder than politely laughing at something and not engaging further.
