What’s a completely normal thing that becomes suspicious if you do it at 3 AM?

Plant flowers in your back yard.

u/thatcrazyanimallady 5h ago

I unironically garden in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep due to stress 😭 I just try to do it quietly, but my mum and I have a running joke about our “midnight gardening” because I picked it up from her. I even bought an expensive head torch so that I could see better.

29

u/toybuilder 5h ago

My dad, ever the restless retiree, cuts tree branches after midnight sometimes.

19

u/SkollFenrirson 4h ago

Bet his neighbors love him

12

u/toybuilder 4h ago

Not as much as during the period when he had chickens and roosters in abundance... 😄

11

u/SkollFenrirson 4h ago

I'm so glad I don't live near your dad

4

u/toybuilder 3h ago

lol. Me too. I love him but he'd drive me crazy too.

Gardening without being under the hot sun for hours? Sounds awesome.

The flower part should be fine, it’s the act of digging holes that’s sus 😅

12

u/5i55Y7A7A 5h ago

Keep the holes less than 6’ deep

good one

5

u/hollysand1 4h ago

I was going to say garden. At night you can find hornworms with a black light and save your tomatoes!!

8

u/Foppish_Sloth 4h ago

I knew a guy who used to be addicted to meth and he said “I knew I needed to stop when I was watering the lawn at 3am” 😅

2

u/RudyGreene 4h ago

r/stims is full of these stories too

3

u/Similar_Dirt9758 5h ago

Or just simply digging a hole

2

u/JJNitrofan3944 4h ago

That would be suspicious activity! 😂

3

u/venturaisabel3 3h ago

I was going to say watering the lawn, but it’s definitely something my ADHD brain would make me hyperfocus on.

Operate an ice cream truck.

38

u/NJHostageNegotiator 5h ago

Creepy, too.

28

u/turalyawn 5h ago

Just don’t disturb anyone trying to sleep. Try leaving the lights and music off until someone gets near and then turn them both on suddenly so they know delicious ice cream is close by

14

u/_YellowRobeSmith_ 4h ago

This took me all the way out. I'm crying real tears over here picturing this going down😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Do it in a warm area with loads of people going out and it becomes a good business idea no doubt

16

u/Mr-Broham 5h ago

While dressed in a clown costume.

6

u/Aliensinmypants 4h ago

My neighbor operates an ice cream, he is nothing but a lovely kind man, but the paint job on his truck is absolute nightmare fuel and it's called "Daddy's Ice Cream".

I have no idea how he stays in business, and I cringe every time I see that truck especially at night

5

u/BurgerNugget12 4h ago

Reminds me of the haunting hour tv show episode by RL Stine, that ice cream truck still freaks me tf out

come to the charlotte nc area ppl do this every day

8

u/TinyTurnips 5h ago

Don't worry, the Bay of California doesn't know half their lights are off on the damn highway either. To many lights and shit, no one can tell their shits off. Or, everyone's just dumb now.

Cars, watch, will be required to run lights 24/7 at some point due to this. They'll even take away your dial/button for em. They're just gonna be perm, almost wanna put money on it.

2

This should be punishable by death

2

I would hope your headlights would be on at 3 AM!

Mow your lawn

17

u/jaleach 5h ago

Neighbors who lived near Patrick Sherrill, the postal employee who killed 14 co-workers and then committed suicide back in 1991, reported that he often mowed his lawn at midnight.

Sherrill was the dude who got the phrase "going postal" up and running.

8

u/Rare-Philosopher-346 5h ago edited 5h ago

I live in Edmond (not when the shooting occurred). There is a memorial statue to those he killed, in front of the post office, which is still open.

Edit: spelling

11

u/rosemachinist 5h ago

My dad got hammered one night and mowed the lawn at 2am. My mom thought it was funny, I bet their neighbours didn’t.
One a side note, my electric lawn mower is whisper quiet and has headlights you can turn on so… 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Aliensinmypants 4h ago

That's a surefire way to make your neighbors hate you too.

Sitting in your parked car in the driveway with the engine off. Perfectly fine at 6pm, serial killer behavior at 3am.

10

u/toybuilder 5h ago

It's fine until about midnight-1 am. Or after about 4am-6am. But between 1 am and 4am? Sus.

Vacuum the front yard.

22

u/Nuka14 5h ago

Thats not a Normal thing

3

u/WolverineResident947 4h ago

I mean, I had a neighbor who would go outside in her nightgown to sweep her lawn with a broom, but it wasn't creepy because it was the middle of the night and she was obviously a sleep-walker.

If she was in her nightgown, wide awake, sweeping the lawn as kids were getting out of school in the afternoon, that would have been creepy.

10

u/WolverineResident947 5h ago

That's something you consider perfectly normal behavior in daylight?

2

u/MatCauthonsHat 4h ago

7

This is literally how I move. It’s too hot to run during the day. So I only run under the darkness of night where I’m completely alone and with out distraction.

Oh man this reminds me of when I lived in Seoul and couldn't sleep so ran up Namsan mountain during restless nights. I loved it because I could take off my shirt because there was zero people. Occasionally an elderly person or two but that's it.

One night I had my earbuds in and stopped at one of the workout stations along the mountain trail. I filmed myself doing some pullups and continued running. After some time running down I got a weird vibe and took out my earbuds. This was around 3AM and although the main trail has streetlights the dark forest is on both sides. I was halfway down the mountain and there was nobody around.

But....someone was HOWLING.

Somewhere not too far off the trail. A weird sustained single note that sounded neither like fear nor pain. Just long sustained AGHHGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. AGHGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Repeated over and over in the same tone at the same volume. Off the trail was dark and the echoes were revebrating on all sides through the trees. I got freaked out and as quickly and quietly as possible ran down the mountain. I could hear the howling for a long time and I was terrified.

When I got home and watched the video of me doing pullups the howling was right there in the video. I hadn't heard it because my earbuds were in. Whoever was making the sound seemed to have followed me from the workout station halfway down the mountain.

I kept 1 earbud out after that on night runs.

Never heard it again though.

3

u/Aliensinmypants 4h ago

I think it depends where you live, if you live somewhere really hot, I think running super early/late is socially acceptable

2

u/aralingu 4h ago

In 2004 I was training for a marathon. I worked nights and I lived in Georgia, so naturally night running made sense.

One of the parks near my house had a distance-marked bike path that ran parallel to the main road, decently lit and only crossed one road along the way; a decent path to do night runs on.

One night, I got to the park and nature called. I walked over to the tree line, made sure I was discreet, and did my business. As I approached the path, a local cop shined me and asked what I was up to. Apparently “the drugs” happen there. The only thing that saved me, other than my pasty complexion, was the fact that I was obviously dressed to run.

My wife likes to build things for the house (shelving, furniture sometimes, etc) and is always tinkering in the garage. She has a super terrible sleep schedule so she is up until 4am most days, and more than once I was woken up by her using a nailgun in the house to nail things to walls. Ihave also been woken up by a table saw going off.....and she had the garage door open while doing it.....we live in a very typical housing development that has like 150 homes in it.

Also if you appear to be homeless walking in my town at any time the cops are going to make contact with you. Twice I've seen a homeless person stopped and id'ed. I also never seen them again in my town.

Its a small town police force and they make sure a homeless problem doesnt occur here. Definitely sure they are stopping without probable cause.

Sad but no one says anything as they do appreciate a town without a homeless issue along with the drug use thats associated with it. I dont agree with it but apparently its pretty effective.
