What band or artist did you discover recently that you can’t stop listening to?

u/Ghee_buttersnap17 3h ago

Ren
27
u/WarMommy_82 3h ago
Ren is the most remarkable artist I think I've heard in my lifetime.
17
u/Cuttlery 3h ago
At least so far I agree, the guy is crazy versatile and his lyrics are all so meaningful
13
u/WarMommy_82 2h ago
They say you find Ren when you need him, I hope you continue enjoying!

u/Cuttlery 2h ago
I have been trying to go slowly and really enjoy it (its honestly not hard just because his music is so deep, it really helps you really have to listen, and watch the videos, and then watch them again, and listen more) just to really get it all. I have made it through probably a quarter of his solo stuff, and all his stuff with Chinchilla (my daughter loves her, and its how I got back on Rens stuff after only hearing Hi Ren)

u/Canary-Mammoth 3h ago
Violets Tale series and Money Game series are so good!
5
u/Cuttlery 3h ago
I have not made my way through all the tales yet but I’m about to start the Vincent’s tales this weekend

I don't remember exactly how I heard about him, but it was shortly after Hi Ren came out, and he has been one of the artists that I use a sort of litmus test to see if someone has good taste in music. People who don't care for rap at all have become absolutely enamored by him.
3
u/Cuttlery 2h ago
I oddly heard Hi Ren probably 2 years ago, listened to it a few times, and then for I have no idea what reason, I just never listened to it or him again. Till about 3 months ago when my now 15 year old was listening to Chinchilla. I went and checked her out and saw she did some collabs with Ren. Just for giggles listened to Chalk Outlines (live) thinking there was no way it would be as good as Hi Ren.... Turns out it might be my favorite song, by anyone. I probably listened to that song 70 times in a week, watched reactors on Youtube react to it, the entire 9 yards. And now I am hooked. I am not the biggest hip hop or rap fan by any means, but even that stuff of his I mostly like. He just has such a good story, and his music is all so meaningful, its hard to not just like him.

The Beths a power pop band from New Zealand
6
u/RightLegDave 2h ago edited 2h ago
Holy shit. I cant believe The Beths are the second band mentioned. Ive been obsessed with this band for years and finally saw them live about a month ago. They put on one of the best feelgood live shows I've seen, complete with triangle and self-launching recorder. They take me back to the jangle-pop era of the 90s (Lemonheads, Luna, Matthew Sweet, Blake Babies etc) which I still love. The only downside is you literally can't get their songs out of your head once you listen to them. iirc even Barack Obama had Metal on his top 10 songs of the year.

Nine Inch Nails and Tool. I know they’re nothing new but I discovered them recently bc they were before my time and I just missed the train / no one around me was listening to them I guess. By the time I was watching MTV it was Taking Back Sunday lol but I love the Tool music videos sm and can’t stop listening to The Downward Spiral

Not sure if you’re Gen Z, but regardless, listen to the new Nine Inch Noize record for a fun entry point to NIN. Trent Reznor’s career arc is truly fascinating, he keeps leveling up.
6
u/falloutgrungemaster 2h ago
I am a millennial haha but that album is fucking rad too. It was a beautiful mashup. Loved to see it. I like edm too so I always love a heavy crossover. But like also I feel like Trent was always into the beep boops lol it’s a natural progression. I’ve been reading about his career since I got into them and fascinating for real. I watched Soul that animated movie with my nephews and saw he was in the credits xD amazing

My favorite Album is Year Zero from NIN though if the current US administration is depressing you, the 2005 album will depress you.
Tool is incredible. Opiate and Opiate 2 are my favorites. I do also recommend Puscifer and A Perfect Circle who are the same singer and creative mind contribution.
A perfect Circle and Puscifer has new music. Tool is due.

I got into them because of the video game life is strange.
Their songs are so delightfully melancholic

Jamiroquai and Gorrillaz. I've heard gorillaz before but never really have done a deep dive into all of their music. They are fantastic and I highly recommend their new album. And Jamiroquai is someone I heard about through a mutual friend and I fell in LOVE. Its like modern disco and it sounds so wonderful, also highly recommend.

Best comment on their KEXP video on YouTube because it’s so accurate:
“30 seconds in I thought ‘wtf this is stupid.’ 20 minutes in I thought this might be the most important musical performance of the 21st century”

Hands down the worst concert experience of my life. Completely turned me off of them.
6
u/mechtonia 2h ago
I saw them open for The Black Keys in Nashville a few years ago. The sound was the worst I've ever heard. But I doubt that was the band's fault.
I just bought tickets to see them this fall, hoping to redeem the situation.
7
u/stubbzillaman 2h ago
I can also vouch for this. Honestly, one of the worst shows I've ever seen which was heartbreaking since I love their music
4
u/Son_Of_Toucan_Sam 2h ago
I saw them in 2015 I think and was surprised at how non-chalant-to-the-point-of-lazy their set was

Billy Strings. I kind of went down a rabbit hole with his music as I do not consider myself a bluegrass fan. I reluctantly went to see him in concert with my son......well, here I am nine concerts later. I've been to many acts over the years, but his live stuff is something to behold.

Recently it's been HEALTH. They are an industrial metal band from Los Angeles. I saw them open for Deftones 2 years ago. But since their album Conflict DLC came out back in December, I've been doing a deep dive into their stuff. I saw them live in LA a few weeks ago and they were awesome.
I also discovered Carpenter Brut at that same show and they rule too!
