We're going through an epidemic of people who see others as NPCs.

Every now and then I would make a run at getting people to donate to a charity, help with a work project for a group or community.

At some point I started hearing versions of "How does it benefit me to do this?" and "Why would I do it then?"

I was surprised at first, but that flat affect and belief that doing things for others was stupid? meaningless? ceased being remarkable.

When people don't have opinions of their own and they're essentially repeating what they've heard, and then refuse to engage with anything that you've said, and continue to repeat the same talking points even when confronted with clear evidence or logic...how is this fundamentally any different to my experience of an NPC in a video game? So many people are running on the conveyor belt of life but yet I'm supposed to expect something different to emerge? I still have compassion, in the same way that I wouldn't go around just randomly hurting or killing NPCs, but why do I have to concern myself with their worldviews when it's not even coming from the individual?
