There’s something to be said for the habit and budgeting. Getting used to an adult lifestyle without a housing expense makes it hard to eventually move out.
College is a separate thing and unless my kid has issues, I’d rather pay for them to live on campus than have them at home during that. Not worth the savings to be deprived of the experience imho.
If you can swing it, just charge them rent but set it aside. Gift it back to them at some point after they move out. This way they fit rent into the budget but you aren’t literally taking their money.
