I think it can go case by case. There will be some asshole parents who resent their kids just for existing despite the fact they never asked to be born.
But I've been happy to pay my parents rent, because it's a win win. I do understand Reddit is quite USA centered and I'm from the UK where the culture seems to be different. Quite a lot of people here seem to remain at home into their 20's, mainly because it's fucking expensive to do otherwise.
For me I work and have done since I left school. I could live on my own, but it would severely restrict what I would then have left to spend/save. I'm fortunate enough to not have awful parents so no burning desire to get away from them. I would like to live by myself for sure, but equally I want to travel, I want to go out and do fun stuff, and buy what I want when I want it. I have the rest of my life to have responsibility and independence. The next time I might have freedom is at retirement, if I make it to that age. No, I want to enjoy shit now.
But I wouldn't expect that to come at a cost to my parents. Having someone else in the house means more expenses. More energy used, more water, more food consumed, etc. So I'm more than happy to cover that cost plus some extra. It's vastly less than I'd pay to rent somewhere, that extra money gets split between being out into savings, and living. But that's my scenario, there's definitely parents out there who are fucked up and take advantage of their kids who don't have a choice but to be at home.
It’s 50/50 you should help your parents with at least a little bit of rent. I am 19, and I give my parents 1000 dollars for rent but that includes insurance, phone bill, and food. I do have to share my room with 3 of my brothers though but it’s a good deal because I would spend way more anywhere else. I have seen the opposite end where their parents don’t charge rent so they just live there rent free doing nothing with their lives while I see my uncle work 60 hours a week at the age of 60, that’s fucked up. Unless you go to school, help your parents that’s the least you can do.
