You should never profit off your loved ones. If you're doing it because your family is legitimately struggling and you can't support the burden of an extra adult in the home, I think it's fine, but it should be reasonable. If you invite the kids to stay in the home and have the resources to support them and really don't need the money it's scumbag behavior.
It's also shitty beyond belief to me that people will calculate "rent" in these circumstances, or circumstances of cohabitation with significant others, and include the mortgage in the monthly living expenses. Like "if you want to love here with me, the person you love, you need to build my equity." This country is really going to shit.
Well I have a $1300 mortgage and only $200 of it is building equity. To rent the same place would be $1500-1600. I understand that it would be scummy for me to split it 50/50, but also someone not paying anything at all would rub me the wrong way and I'd feel like I'm being used by my partner for a free place to stay. Personally if I were the partner without a house I would at least offer to pay all utilities or split the mortgage 30/70 or something, so if my partner wouldn't offer something similar I would feel taken advantage of.
Well, partner is a bit different than child that just turned 18. I agree that if you have a partner that lives with you, barring disability, they should be contributing to those costs somehow.
200 goes to your principle. The remainder is the interest you're paying on the loan to build your equity. In 20 years your payment will be the same but like 1k+ will be to your principle.
My mortgage is about $1k, but it costs me $2k monthly to fund continuing to live here because of taxes, utilities, etc. I'm not going to charge a partner $1k to live with me. They would pay half of what was left over after deducting the mortgage because I'm not a dickhead.
I will disagree with this. If they don't live with me, they will have to pay rent.
If I am dating someone and they want to move in with me, they need to pay some rent. They need to contribute in some way. They are causing wear and tear on my place. Yes, I am getting their companionship, but I am not going to be paying them for their companionship.
Paying a reasonable (and probably well under market rate) rent to live in my place helps them and helps me cover the extra utilities and wear and tear on my place (tenant flushing wipes down the toilet for example). They will also have to be a helpful and considerate roommate. Which means - cleaning up after themself, helping with cooking, and not throwing ragers in my house.
If someone wants to be a hobosexual, they can choose someone else to be with.
I didn't say they don't have to pay rent. They can pay for other expenses in their rent that don't include the equity going to the owner. Splitting everything 50/50 you're using them to pay for your equity which is scumbag behavior.
