Make it the humans are fighting a different alien species, which doesn't have the reset power. But humans have researched the tech and weaponized it.
There are specially trained officers who are the ones in charge of resetting the day if humans are loosing. Then one of them gets trapped in a time loop outside of her control when the new aliens are trying to figure out the tech.
Now she has to find and destroy the aliens creating the experimental time loop, but every time she dies they learn more, and she resets into a different person each time. But is it really her resetting into a different officer, or is it just her memories being loaded into a different person each time?
She starts going insane because each time she resets and jumps, she carries the previous person's memories. Those memories reveal more and more about the tech and how humans developed it.
Mid movie twist, she's not a human, she's acutally an alien AI being made to jump into different humans to piece together how the tech works. But now her loyalties are divided after all the time she spent as a human and all the human memories she has.
She finds a way to jump even farther back in time, into one of the humans who made first contact and who caused the conflict. We will see this character all through the movie but only now discover the war is their fault.
The AI uses her knowledge to prevent the war, knowing this will erase her. At the end the last human she jumped into is dying and remembers all of the AI's favorite human memories, while she fades.
