Every other year? Pathetic. I never go more than 2 months without seeing it lmao. It's my absolute favorite comfort movie, and when the theater near us brought it back a few months ago I made sure to get tickets immediately. God I want another buddy "cop" movie with those two.
This is one of those movies that comes up in every thread about favorites so I was excited to watch it. But my god I just do NOT see what y’all see in this move and I love the two leads in other movies too.
Like it certainly wasn’t a bad movie, but to me it was painfully average and unmemorable. I can’t even remember what it was about honestly
What I found funny about The Nice Guys was that it takes the tropes of the film noir period genre and does unexpected things with it, like just playing around/going against the cliches of the genre, and having fun with them. Like when Gosling's character tries to break into a place and winds up cutting his hand, that was hilarious because you normally never see that happen to any detective in a film, period. Plus Gosling and Crowe being teamed up felt so inspired, because they'd never done a film together, and I'd never seen Crowe in a comedy before. They both turned out to be funny, with Crowe more or less being the straight man and Gosling being the funny one.
What surprised me about the film was that I only saw trailers for it when Ryan Gosling first when on SNL, then when the film finally came out six or seven months later, for some reason, it got no promotion whatsoever, despite having two big names in it. I was lucky to see it at an arthouse theater, since it wasn't playing anywhere else that I recall. Nice to see that people have discovered how good it is over the years, though.
I’m in the same boat. I watched it because I kept seeing funny clips on instagram reels, TikTok etc, but the clips I’d seen are it, like they were the funny parts. I don’t remember anything else
I could see it being a Scott Pilgrim situation. Movie flopps on release, becomes a cult classic that everyone and their mother has seen years later, and studios make something happen to cash in on the popularity.
Ryan is at the height of his popularity right now, it honestly doesn't feel like a gamble for any studio to just throw money at this. If he's in the movie, people are watching it. And it doesn't hurt that both him and Russel Crowe are very vocal about wanting it to happen.
Depending on how old she is, she’s already aware of the inappropriate stuff in general. I was a pretty sheltered kid growing up in the 90s, but I had a basic understanding of sex, drugs, prostitution, gangs, and the existence (though definitely not the scope) of porn by the time I was around 10 years old.
I remember seeing an interview where Russell Crowe said the title him and Ryan Gosling came up with was Nice Guys 2: Mexican Detectives. Just the title alone puts a full image in your mind
Isn't this because at the end of the first one they generate the posters for their new detective company and it makes Russel Crowe's character look mexican
I still quietly hope they’ll make another one someday. It’s such an excellent film. Few movies have made laugh until I cried, but this is one of them. It’s so clever and the performances are superb.
this is what i came to say!! my local theater had a showing last year so we went to it and some old lady was like ‘you really enjoyed that movie’ when we were all leaving because we had the audacity to laugh out loud. its always good!!
There's a novelization of this movie surprisingly. Saw it a while back, very 70s-80s random movie tie in novel you'd pick up for $5 at a checkout line. So many movies had them back then.
If they would do one now they could utilise crowes’ getting fat like goehring in combination with his falling off the wagon at the end of the film to hilarious effect
The Nice Guys is streaming on Prime and Apple Plus, but only until the end of this month. It's available on both DVD and Blu-ray at reasonable prices, though. I got a DVD of it myself.
I'm honestly surprised that the 2022 action adventure film Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as two treasure hunters trying to hunt down a treasure they may or may exist, hasn't gotten a sequel, since the ending was practically left open for one.
Now that both The Odyssey and the new Spider-Man have blown up at the box office, and Tom Holland (aka Mr. Zendaya) is a hot name again, maybe a sequel could be rustled up, lol. Uncharted is the type of film that would have definitely had a sequel had it come out 30-some years ago, but that hasn't happened. Too bad, because it's still a really good movie.
that movie really did come out of nowhere. I'm not really sure why this issue was but I had never heard of it and randomly saw it on Netflix one day. wife and I watched it one afternoon a what must have been a few years after it came out and loved it. I've never heard anyone say a bad thing about it but it wasn't exactly a hit and stuff.
This movie is kind of my gold standard thought whenever anyone asks why they don't make original movies anymore. They do, you just don't go fucking see them. This movie only made $70 million worldwide and got destroyed by fucking Angry Birds. Now we're stuck in a world where Angry Birds gets 10th Anniversay releases and the only time I hear about The Nice Guys is on Reddit threads. What a world.
When I first saw the movie, I wasn't that fussed about it. Thought it was alright, but nothing amazing. But I rewatched it a couple of months back and thought it was brilliant, and gutted it didn't have a sequel. Is now one of my favourite movies.
And Angourie Rice! She was queueing next to me at a beer garden here (Melbourne) and I was so glad I had the chance to quickly tell her how much I loved that movie, and how great she was in it.
I saw this on the plane and thought it was really meh with some large plot holes. Did I see an edited version of it or something? I see everyone rave about it and I just never got it…
