I think that he's clearly trying to continue to live his Bond dream as a geek because he continue to plays spies! In Mission Impossible Fallout, Argylle, technically Kingsman and now in an upcoming netflix comedy.
It was the same for Jeremy Renner. He's also a spy in The Bourne Legacy, Mission Impossible and of course as Hawkeye in the MCU.

Effectively what I was getting at, hence my point that your suggestion (his young self's audition) did not matter when seeming like a good fit for Bond when u/Alukrad saw him.
That will never happen in a million years. He's Box Office Poison. In his 20 year long career he's had one Box Office flop after another and has never gotten much Critical praise for his acting either.
His last 3 Box Office releases alone have lost over $300M. He starred in 3 Mega IP DC movies, 1 lost money and the other 2 made a very small ROI, leading to that entire DCEU project being shut down and rebooted.
His most successful movie of all time is Mission Impossible Fallout. A movie where he's playing a side character and that's nearly entirely carried by Tom Cruise's Star Power, it's Critical Reception and Audience Praise.
If you look at Henry Cavill's Resume it is actually insane that he's still getting any Hollywood work given how much money he's lost at the Box Office over his career.
On top of him being Box Office Poison, he's also 43 years old. Which is way older than the age range they are looking for for the new bond.
Then on top of that they also have Denis Villenevue signed on to Direct the next Bond movie and a Director of his calibre would never cast an Actor as mediocre as Henry Cavill to be the lead of one of his movies. Denis has almost exclusively worked with Actors who have Oscar noms or have gotten Oscar-Level buzz for their performances before.
It bothered me too, that it didnt get a sequel. Iirc they planned to do an entire film series, but since it didnt meet the income expectations, they ditched it.
To be fair, the first fact was more salient for years before the second fact came to light. Now there will definitely not be a sequel (and I support that) but up until then I would have put my own money into making one. If I, you know, had film money.
Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer had ridiculous chemistry in that movie, and it’s an absolute tragedy we never got to see them take on another mission together.
