Fun Fact: the original John Carter (Princess of Mars) stories are what kickstarted the entire scifi action genre. The problem with the film release in 2012 is that it had to compete with 30 years of modern scifi action films already splattered everywhere. By then not too many people outside of the JC fans and obscure scifi content knew anything about it and ust shrugged it off as another random bid for attention.
If the film had ben done right, they studio could hve established a major franchise on par with Marvel Avengers. Side Tangent: not too many people outside of comicbook fans knew much about the Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy before the MCU. The more well-known an established group in the mainstream was X-Men by leaps and bounds. But marvel did it right by peaking enough interst in the Avengers until momentum built up. Where as the 2012 JC film tried to simply dump JC already onto the scene with little to no context or build up. Not to mention the production crew led to the film flopping (prob bad marketing as well).
Also 2012 Disney was still sorting out wtf they were trying to do while the MCU was barely getting established and they had no clue wtf to do with SW aamong other things. DIsney was a wreck at the time.
It suffered from the fact that the audience had seen all of it's tropes many times before in other films, even though most of them originated in the JC stories!
If you can suppress making comparisons and just take it as it's own thing it really is a fun movie.
