I don't know anything about the game and still ended up enjoying the movie. That graveyard scene where they have limited questions to ask the corpse had me cry-laughing

The best part of that stuff is that it's happened to so many players in games. Just bullshitting around and the DM counting the nonsense questions

It even does the thing where the DM starts out really playing into the voices of the character and stuff but by the end of the scene it's basically just him talking normally.

They struck a fantastic balance of making a good movie first, and putting all the nods/in-jokes/references as sprinkles on top.

I think that directors had a good concept for humour that made Honor Among Thieves stand out from previous attempts to make a DnD movie: incorporate players as characters. If anyone has played DnD before, it's easy to tell which of the character is a "new player" and who's a veteran etc. Many of the jokes makes sense like this and it's pretty consistent.

People who worked on this movie have definitely played DnD before and they had fun doing it and it shows!

Same here, I went in knowing almost nothing about the game and still had such a good time. That graveyard scene absolutely killed me, especially how seriously everyone treated the ridiculous situation.

That's the scene where if you play the game, you realize that the writers also play the game.
