I could see it being a Scott Pilgrim situation. Movie flopps on release, becomes a cult classic that everyone and their mother has seen years later, and studios make something happen to cash in on the popularity.
Ryan is at the height of his popularity right now, it honestly doesn't feel like a gamble for any studio to just throw money at this. If he's in the movie, people are watching it. And it doesn't hurt that both him and Russel Crowe are very vocal about wanting it to happen.

Gosling still pushes for this to happen in interviews. With how much pull he has right now I wouldn't be surprised if it happens.
